Salazar scores team-record 5 runs, Mets work 15 walks

ST. LUCIE METS PRESS RELEASE: PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. (May 4, 2023) – The St. Lucie Mets snapped an eight-game losing streak in emphatic fashion on Thursday, dismantling the Jupiter Hammerheads 18-4 at Clover Park (Box Score).

The Mets were assisted by 15 walks issued by Hammerheads pitching, including four with the bases loaded to force home runs. No. 9 hitter Blaine McIntosh drew a walk in four consecutive innings, three of which came with the bags full.

Wilfredo Lara went 3 for 6 with a home run, double and five RBI. Eduardo Salazar went 2 for 4 and scored five runs, which is a franchise record for an individual player.

The Mets pounded out 11 hits in addition to the 15 walks. They scored in six consecutive innings. The Mets scored six runs in the sixth inning and four more runs in the seventh.

Meanwhile, Mets pitchers were equally as impressive. Starter Felipe De La Cruz pitched 5.2 innings and gave up just one hit, an infield single in the fourth inning. He was charged with two runs (both unearned). De La Cruz walked three and struck out seven. He earned his first win of the season.

Brian Gursky struck out Javier Sanoja to end the sixth. Eli Ankeney pitched the seventh and eighth innings. He struck out six of the seven batters he faced. The other batter reached on an error.

The Mets scored twice in the fourth without a hit to go up 5-2. They loaded the bases on an error and two walks. McIntosh took the first of his four straight free passes to bring in a run and chase Reynoso from the game.

Justin Fall entered and got a double play to bring in a second run, but Fall was roughed up in the fifth and sixth inning. Salazar hit a run-scoring single in the fifth and Adrian Hernandez’s ground out scored two runs when Harrison Spohn made a throwing error. The Mets led 8-2 after the fifth.

The Mets sent 11 batters to the plate in the sixth against Fall and Maycold Leon. DyonCampos and McIntosh worked back-to-back walks with the bases loaded. Lara, who started the inning with a single, came back up and bashed a two-run double that made it 14-2.

In the four-run seventh inning Campos hit a RBI infield single, McIntosh took another bases loaded walk, Jett Williams was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded and Lara picked up his fifth RBI on a ground out to extend the lead to 18-2.

Fall was tagged for nine runs (five earned) in 2.1 innings. He walked five. Leon issued four free passes.

The Mets set season highs in runs scored, walks taken and margin of victory.
