Tim Healey Newsday: Justin Verlander makes Mets debut, but that doesn't prevent sweep by Tigers. "Verlander’s conspicuous opening featured first-inning home runs on back-to-back swings from Riley Greene and Javier Baez, staking the Tigers to a quick two-run lead that lasted the rest of the game. Baez hit two in two days against his former team; he had zero before that...Settling down from there, Verlander scattered three more hits and a walk, totaling 79 pitches."

Mike Puma NY Post: "The Mets, who lost for the ninth time in 11 games, were shut out for the sixth time this season. Nimmo delivered the Mets’ third hit of the day, a single against Tigers closer Alex Lange with one out in the ninth. With Starling Marte at the plate, Nimmo bolted for second and was thrown out by Jake Rogers, removing the tying run possibility. Moments later Marte struck out to end the game."

Brian Joura Mets 360: "Another dismal day for the offense had the Mets getting shut out, 2-0, by the Tigers Thursday afternoon in Detroit. The loss meant they got swept by a second division club. It also dropped the club’s record to 16-16 on the season. It seems a lifetime ago when they were 14-7."

Metstradamus: "16-16 during a period where they were down to their 6th through 9th starters, and through multiple rainouts leading to doubleheaders and a tough (and unnecessary) travel schedule, isn’t that bad."

Mike Vaccaro NY Post: Mets have some troubling realities to acknowledge after Tigers sweep.  "The Mets are scuffling. They are taking a slew of terrible at-bats, and heading into Thursday they’d suffered from the worst starting pitching through 31 games since … the ’62 Mets. It’s kind of a bad thing when you can’t hit and you can’t pitch, and there isn’t a single favorable thing that can happen when you start measuring yourself up against the ’62 Mets."
