BINGHAMTON, N.Y. – The Binghamton Rumble Ponies (13-15) swept the Hartford Yard Goats (14-14) in a doubleheader at Mirabito Stadium on Wednesday night. The Ponies’ pitching staff was dominant, blanking the Yard Goats in the second game of the night.
Game One: Rumble Ponies 6, Yard Goats 2
Binghamton’s
starting pitcher Junior Santos delivered his best outing of the season. He tied
a season high going six innings and allowed just two runs with two strikeouts
and no walks.
The
Ponies used timely hitting to take the lead and extend it. Down 1-0 in the
second, Agustin Ruiz drove in Brandon McIlwain with a sacrifice fly to tie the
game. One inning later Matt Rudick belted his third home run of the season,
which gave Binghamton a 2-1 lead.
With
the game tied 2-2 in the fourth, Hayden Senger hit a two-run homer to extend
the Ponies’ lead to 4-2. Binghamton added two more runs in the sixth inning on
RBI doubles from Ruiz and Rowdey Jordan, putting the Ponies up 6-2.
New
York Mets left-handed reliever Brooks Raley began a rehab assignment for
Binghamton and closed the game out with three strikeouts in his one inning of
work.
Game Two: Rumble Ponies 2, Yard Goats 0
Binghamton’s
starting pitcher Alex Valverde cruised through 5.1 scoreless innings, as he
allowed just one hit and one walk with five strikeouts. Valverde retired
14-straight batters at one point in his outing.
Daison Acosta made his first appearance of the season for Binghamton and tossed 1.2
scoreless frames with two strikeouts, earning his first save of the year.
The
Ponies once again used timely hitting with two-out RBI doubles from Tanner Murphy and Jose Peroza in the second and third innings, respectively, to take a
2-0 lead.
The
Rumble Ponies continue their series with the Yard Goats on Thursday at Mirabito
Stadium. First pitch is set for 6:05 PM and pregame coverage will get underway
at 5:50 PM on Newsradio 1290 WNBF and 92.1 FM.
Postgame
Notes: Senger hit his first homer of the year in the first
game…Ruiz had multiple RBIs in the first game…Luke Ritter had a multi-hit game
and reached base three times in the second game.
