hits grand slam in loss
ST. LUCIE METS PRESS RELEASE: PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. (June 28, 2023) – The Dunedin Blue Jays scored nine unanswered runs to come back and beat the St. Lucie Mets 9-5 in the series opener at Clover Park on Wednesday (Box Score).
The Mets
jumped ahead early by scoring five runs in the second inning, highlighted by a
two-out grand slam from Kevin Villavicencio. It was the Mets first grand slam
of the season and Villavicencio’s first homer of the year. Jett Williams later
drove in a run with a single to put the Mets up 5-0.
Meanwhile
Mets starter Layonel Ovalles cruised through the first three innings scoreless.
The Blue Jays scraped across a run in the fourth on a wild pitch and another in
the fifth on a ground out to make it 5-2.
The game
turned in favor of the Blue Jays in the seventh inning. With two outs and two
runners on, Manuel Beltre hit a slow ground ball to Villavicencio at third.
Villavicencio threw wildly to first base and two runners scored to make it 5-4.
Roque
Salinas tied the game 5-5 with a RBI single off Javier Atencio in the eighth.
Later in the inning with two outs, JC Masson crushed a three-run homer to make
it 8-5.
Ryan
McCarty added an insurance run with a RBI triple in the ninth for a 9-5 lead.
Atencio
took the loss. He allowed six hits and seven runs (five earned) over 3.0
innings. He walked three and struck out three.
After Blue
Jays starter Alex Amalfi gave up five runs in just 1.2 innings, the Blue Jays
bullpen was lights out. Five relievers combined to hold the Mets off the board
over the final 7.1 innings. Anders Tolhurst pitched the seventh and eighth
innings to get the win.
Jose Hernandez went 2 for 4 to lead the Mets in hits.
The Mets (1-2, 25-43) and Blue Jays (2-2, 34-36) play the second game of their series on Thursday. First pitch is 6:30 p.m. It is Military Appreciation Night and Dollar Night.
