AKRON, OH – Luis Moreno remained dominant as he threw five no-hit innings allowing just one walk and striking out nine as the Binghamton Rumble Ponies (32-31) defeated the Akron RubberDucks 5-2 in the series opener Tuesday night at Canal Park.

Moreno allowed just one baserunner, issuing a walk to Juan Brito with one out in the second. He ended his outing striking out Johnathan Rodriguez swinging and Korey Holland looking. He was one strikeout shy of his career high (10) that he set last Thursday against Portland over six frames.

Marcel Renteria took over for Moreno and retired the side in order in the sixth. Akron’s first hit came on a Petey Halpin single to center to begin the seventh.

The Ponies got on the board in the first on Brandon McIlwain’s two-out RBI single to right to score Rowdey Jordan. Wyatt Young then hit a two-run homer to right in the fourth to extend the Ponies lead to 3-0, his second home run of the season. Binghamton would add two more in the frame as Jordan grounded into an RBI forceout and McIlwain walked with the bases loaded to force home Branden Fryman. That capped off a four-run frame to make it 5-0 Binghamton.

Angel Martinez hit a two-run homer to right in the ninth to spoil the shutout and account for Akron’s runs.

Moreno over his last three outings has allowed just three runs over 18 innings, striking out 26 batters and walking only five.

The two teams continue their series on Wednesday night with first pitch at 6:35 PM. The NYCM Insurance Pregame Show begins at 6:20 PM on the WNBF Rumble Ponies Radio Network.

Postgame Notes: Young finished 2-for-4 and extended his hitting streak to eight games…McIlwain was 2-for-4 with two RBIs and reached base three times.
