Here are the Brooklyn Cyclone Game Notes for today's game:

The Brooklyn Cyclones (13-4, 41-41) go for a series sweep against the Greensboro Grasshoppers (3-13, 39-41) — the High-A affiliate of the Pittsburgh Pirates — on Sunday afternoon at 4 p.m. from Maimonides Park on Coney Island. 


RHP Joander Suárez (3-6, 6.63) is scheduled to take the hill for Brooklyn against the Pirates’ No 25 prospect per Baseball America, Greensboro’s RHP Po-Yu Chen (3-5, 4.15 ERA).

LAST TIME OUT: Brooklyn earned their third-straight win and clinched a series victory with a 3-0 triumph over Greensboro on Saturday...7 different pitchers combined on the Cyclones’ 7th shutout of the season...RHP Jordany Ventura tossed 2.0 scoreless to start but did not return after a 44-minute lightning delay...RHPs Robert ColinaLuis MontasJoshua CorniellyManny RodríguezWilkin Ramos, and Dylan Hall combined to toss 7.0 innings of 3-hit ball out of the bullpen to secure the win...C Kevin Parada provided 2 of Brooklyn’s 3 runs thanks to solo home runs in the 1st and 5th innings...3B William Lugo also added 2 hits, including a double. 

 

THE .500 CLUB: With Brooklyn’s victory on Saturday night, the Cyclones returned to .500 on the season at 41-41...It was the first time the ‘Clones were at the .500 mark since they were 2-2 following a 5-3 defeat at Winston-Salem on April 11...With a win on Sunday, Brooklyn would be over .500 for the first time since the 3rd game of the season...The Cyclones moved to 2-1 with a 4-2 win vs. Jersey Shore to close out the season-opening homestand on April 9. 

 

TIME TO MAKE THE DONUTS: Brooklyn collected their 7th shutout win of the season with a 3-0 blanking of Greensboro on Saturday...7 different pitchers combined on the shutout...RHPs Jordany Ventura (2.0 IP), Robert Colina (2.0), Luis Montas (1.0), Joshua Cornielly (1.0), Manny Rodríguez (1.0), Wilkin Ramos (1.0), and Dylan Hall (1.0)...It was the Cyclones’ first shutout since a 2-0 victory vs. Hudson Valley on June 24...Brooklyn has matched their shutout total from 2022 (7)...The last time Brooklyn accrued more than 7 shutouts in a season was when they tallied 10 in 76 games in the New York-Penn League in 2014. 

 

WALK THIS WAY: Brooklyn’s offense tallied 8 walks in Saturday’s victory over Greensboro...Two different players — DH Drake Osborn and 1B Mateo Gil — each accrued 3 walks in the contest...The 8 free passes are tied for the most for the Cyclones in a 9-inning game this season...Brooklyn also coaxed 8 walks on April 12 at Winston-Salem...The team’s season-high is 12 in April 7’s Opening Day victory vs. Jersey Shore in 11 innings. 

 

SUPER STAFF: Since the start of a 4-game winning streak at Hudson Valley on May 17, the Cyclones’ pitching staff has, statistically, been the most dominant in Minor League Baseball...Entering Sunday, Brooklyn has posted a MiLB-low 2.64 ERA (130 ER in 444.0 IP) over their last 51 games, holding a 30-21 record in that span...The Yankees’ High-A Hudson Valley (2.89) is 2nd in the minors...The Cyclones have hurled 6 shutouts in that span and hold a strikeout rate of 28.4% and a walk rate of 11.3%...Additionally, Brooklyn pitching has permitted the fewest home runs (14) and holds the lowest opposing OPS (.588), in addition to the 3rd lowest hits-per-9 innings (6.57) in that time period...RHPs Tyler Stuart (1.62) and Blade Tidwell (1.73) hold the 2nd and 3rd best ERA’s in MiLB during that time (min. 50.0 IP). 

 

RED HOT RELIEF: The Cyclones’ relief staff has been exquisite at quelling fires in 2023...Entering Sunday, Brooklyn has the best bullpen ERA (3.03) in the entire South Atlantic League and throughout Minor League Baseball...The Rangers’ Single-A Down East (3.05) is 2nd in MiLB, while Hudson Valley (3.45) is 2nd in the circuit...RHP Paul Gervase (1.26) is 1st and 3rd in ERA among SAL and MiLB relievers, respectively (min. 35.0 IP). 

 

CUTTING ‘EM DOWN: RHP Blade Tidwell is amid his best stretch of baseball in 2023...Tidwell has earned the win in 4 of his last 5 outings with Brooklyn winning all 5 games...He has permitted just 6 runs on 21 hits over 31.2 innings...He has walked only 7 (5.8 BB%) and struck out 43 (35.8 K%) in those contests...Tidwell punched out a career-high and team-season-best-matching 11 in consecutive starts on July 6 at Wilmington and June 30 vs. Jersey Shore...This comes after tied a then-career-best with 10 strikeouts on June 11 vs. Greenville...Tidwell also whiffed 10 on May 4 vs. Aberdeen...Over his last 10 starts dating back to May 17 at Hudson Valley, Tidwell is 6-0 with a 1.73 ERA (10 ER in 52.0 IP) with just 31 hits allowed...The Loretto, Tenn. native has walked 27 and struck out 76 (36.2 K%)...Tidwell’s holding opponents to a meager .169 batting average (31-182) against him...Tidwell leads the South Atlantic League and Minor League Baseball in strikeouts (76) by 2 over Hudson Valley’s RHP Drew Thorpe (74)...He also leads in batting average against (.170) and 3rd in ERA (1.73) since that date (min. 50.0 IP)...On the season in the SAL, the Loretto, Tenn. native is 2nd in batting average against (.196), tied for 3rd in wins (6), 4th in strikeouts (103), and 6th in ERA (3.45). 

 

WE’RE GOING STREAKING: Brooklyn’s season-high 5-game winning streak came to a close on July 8 at Wilmington...Alas, the team has won 8-of-9 and 14-of-18 going into Sunday’s contest...The Cyclones are 13-4 in the second half and lead the North Division of the SAL by 1.5 games over Aberdeen (11-5)...Brooklyn is half a game behind Hickory (13-3) for the best record in the circuit during the half...The 5-game streak was the longest for the ‘Clones since they won 6-straight from September 3-9, 2022, vs. Wilmington and at Winston-Salem. 

 

PARADA POWER: Kevin Parada registered his 2nd multi-home run game of the season on Saturday, tallying solo shots in the 1st and 5th innings...The Pasadena, Calif. native also accrued multiple blasts on June 23 vs. Hudson Valley...Kevin poked a solo home run in the 3rd and a 2-run inside-the-parker in the 6th...Since 2005, Parada is 1 of 2 Cyclones to record a pair of multi-homer games in the same season...INF Nick Evans powered a pair of jacks on July 22, 2005, vs. Jamestown and again on August 24, 2005, at Williamsport...Dating back to June 6 vs. Greenville, the 21-year-old is slashing .318/.387/.598 with a .985 OPS and 163 wRC+ in 28 games...Parada has accrued 17 runs scored, 3 doubles, 3 triples, 7 home runs, 19 RBI, 10 walks, and 2 hit-by-pitches...The former Georgia Tech Yellow Jacket enters Sunday 5th in the South Atlantic League in extra-base hits (31) and total bases (131), tied for 5th in doubles (17) and hits (76), and 10th in slugging percentage (.468) and OPS (.823)...Since June 6, Parada is tied for 1st in triples (3), 2nd in total bases (64), 3rd in slugging (.598), tied for 5th in home runs (7) and hits (34), 6th in batting average (.318), tied for 6th in extra-base hits (13), and 7th in OPS (.985). 

 

LUGO LAND: INF William Lugo has been scalding hot with the bat over the last few weeks...Since June 22 vs. Hudson Valley, the 21-year-old is slashing .340/.419/.642 with a 1.061 OPS and a 180 wRC+...In 15 games, Lugo is hitting .340 (18-53) with 8 runs scored, 5 doubles, a triple, 3 home runs, 12 RBI, and 7 walks to only 9 strikeouts...In that time, the right-handed swinger has raised his batting average by 40 points (.181 to .221)...Among SAL players with 60 or more plate appearances, Lugo is 2nd in slugging percentage (.683), 6th in the circuit in OPS (1.061) and batting average (.340), tied for 7th in total bases (41), tied for 10th in RBI (12) in that time frame. 

 

OMAR KEEPS SWIPING: OF Omar De Los Santos stole a pair of bags on July 9 at Wilmington and has 32 stolen bases in 2023...The 32 swipes match INF Walter Rasquin’s franchise record for single-season stolen bases which was set back in 2017 when Brooklyn played in the short-season New York-Penn League...He is also tied for 2nd in the SAL in stolen bases for 2023...De Los Santos remains among the best base stealers in Minor League Baseball since the beginning of 2022...The Dominican native has accumulated 102 stolen bases in that span, which is 5th most in MiLB...Only Aberdeen OF Luis Valdez (106), D’Backs prospect OF Wilderd Patiño (106), Mariners farmhand OF Jonatan Clasé (105), and Marlins farmhand INF Nasim Núñez (103) have tallied more...De Los Santos has also snagged 61 more bases than any other Mets prospect in that time...Fellow 2023 Cyclone IF/OF Jaylen Palmer is 2nd with 41. 

 

AL-WAYS ON: OF Alex Ramírez is tied for 3rd in the South Atlantic League in walks (22), 5th in pitches-per-plate appearance (4.048), and tied for 8th in runs scored (23), since the beginning of June (min. 140 PA)...Ramírez is scattered among the Cyclones’ all-time leaderboard despite joining the team last July 4...Entering Sunday, the Dominican native is 3rd in franchise history in RBI (71) and is 20 behind INF José Peroza (91) for the all-time mark...He is also 3rd in doubles (29) and hits (125), 5th in total bases (187), and 7th in runs scored (63). 

 

SHUCKED: RHP Joshua Cornielly has hit his stride over the last 2-plus months for the Cyclones’ bullpen...Since allowing 5 runs in 0.1 innings on April 15 at Winston-Salem, the 22-year-old has been as consistent as any relief arm on the staff...Dating back to April 21 vs. Wilmington, Cornielly holds a 2-1 record with a 1.82 ERA (6 ER in 29.2 IP) in 16 appearances (1 start)...The Caraças, Venezuela native has permitted 25 hits, walked 10 (8.1 BB%), and struck out 36 (29.3 K%)...Among South Atlantic League relievers with one or fewer starts since that date, Cornielly ranks 3rd in the league in ERA (1.82) trailing only Bowling Green’s RHP Nate Dahle (1.08) and teammate RHP Paul Gervase (1.53)...He is also 6th in walks-per-9 innings (3.03) and 7th in walk-to-strikeout rate (.278).
