As we had yesterday, the New York Mets acquired RHP Trevor Gott and RHP Chris Flexen from the Seattle Mariners in exchange for LHP Zach Muckenhirn. The Mets promptly designated Flexen for assignment.
NY Post: The Post’s Joel Sherman confirmed the Mets will pick up the roughly $4 million due to Flexen, who immediately was designated for assignment. In buying Flexen, the Mets pried away Gott, who is owed about $600,000 and who has been a solid journeyman reliever.
SNY.TV: "So in order to land a reliever like Gott, the Mets were willing to take Flexen's salary off the Mariners' hands, even if they had no intention of keeping Flexen on the roster. SNY's Andy Martino reported in late June that this strategy of taking on bad contracts to acquire players could prove beneficial for the Mets."
Joel Sherman NY Post Sports+: Be they trade deadline buyers or sellers, the Mets’ future rests on answering one question. "What are Steve Cohen’s payroll intentions for 2024?...So, if they decide to sell more than just walk-year players such as David Robertson and Tommy Pham, they will have to believe they are getting enough in return and that those traded players can be adequately replaced for next season." Anthony Rieber Newsday: Shop Pete Alonso? If the Mets want to shake up things, they should consider it at the MLB trade deadline. Anthony notes that "Alonso is as close as the Mets have to a captain. He’s the face of the franchise in a way the two Hall of Fame-bound pitchers will never be. Scherzer and Verlander are hired guns. Alonso is a homegrown Met who talks orange and blue, sometimes profanely, but the fans love him for being who he is." And you want to trade that guy?
Jon Heynam NY Post: A Mets fire sale would be more dreadful than their season. About the possibility of trading Pete Alonso he states: "Alonso would obviously bring big value as one of baseball’s very best home run hitters, not to mention an impossibly fast recoverer from injury. But as one rival said, 'The fans would revolt if they traded Pete.'”
NY Post: Brandon Nimmo the rare Mets star improving in dreadful season. Mark Sanchez discusses how "The 30-year-old has smoked 12 home runs in his first 82 games, on pace for 23...Nimmo has never smacked more than 17 in a season, but slugging has become his area of improvement this year." What Mark doesn't tell you is that last year Nimmo K's are up with 85 as of today a rate of 1.03 a game vs. last year when he K'd 116 in 151 games a rate on 0.77 a game.
NY Post Sports+: The Mets’ problem isn’t how much they’re spending, but who they’re spending it on. Ethan Sears talks about how "The Mets are not only spending more money than any team in the history of the sport. They are doing so at a time when we have access to more predictive data than ever. In theory, that means they should be spending efficiently in addition to doing so on a seemingly unlimited level." Subscription required.
5 things to watch as Mets face Diamondbacks in three-game series at Chase Field. Items include - "Can the Mets build off their series win?" "Tommy in the two spot?" "Will Scherzer keep rolling?"

New York Mets sold Butch Metzger to the Philadelphia Phillies on July 4, 1978.
New York Mets signed free agent Miguel Batista on July 4, 2011.
1972 | In front of a large holiday crowd gathered at Shea Stadium for a doubleheader against San Diego, Tom Seaver takes a no-hitter into the ninth inning for the second time in his career. After getting Dave Roberts to ground out to second base, Leron Lee singles up the middle to spoil the no-hit bid of the 27 year-old Mets right-hander, who has to settle for his fourth one-hitter when he induces the next batter to hit into a game-ending double play. |
1985 | With a double in the first, a triple in the fourth, a homer in the eighth inning, Keith Hernandez completes the cycle with a single in the twelfth frame of a 19-inning contest with the Braves. The Mets first baseman's four hits, all off different pitchers, contribute to New York's 16-13 early morning victory at Atlanta-Fulton County Stadium. You Tube Link. |
1985 | "If he hits a home run to tie this game, this game will be certified as absolutely the nuttiest in the history of baseball." - JOHN STERLING, TBS broadcaster commenting to his partner Ernie Johnson about Rick Camp’s at-bat. The Mets outlast the Braves, finally winning the game 16-13 in 19 innings, after Rick Camp, a weak-hitting hurler with a .060 average and 83 strikeouts in 167 at-bats, hit an improbable two-strike, two-out homer off Tom Gorman to tie the game in the bottom of the last frame. Shortly after the game ends at 3:55 in the morning, the approximately thousand fans left in Atlanta Fulton County Stadium stay to see the pre-dawn fireworks which awaken and frighten many of the ballpark's neighbors. You Tube Link. |
2006 | Billy Wagner becomes the 20th pitcher baseball history to record 300 career saves. The significant save for the Mets' southpaw, who has also played for the Astros and Phillies, is his sixteenth of the season. |
1967: The Mets end a 19-game losing streak to Juan Marichal with their first win against the Dominican Dandy, 8 - 7. Marichal's win streak started in 1962. Jack Fisher is the winning pitcher.
1972: Leron Lee singles in the 9th to break up Tom Seaver's no-hitter, but the Mets shut out the Padres, 2 - 0, in the opener. Seaver strikes out 11. The Pads take the nitecap, 4 - 2, as Nate Colbert hits his 16th homer.
1979 - The Phillies' Steve Carlton shuts out the Mets, 1 - 0, on a one-hitter, but the Phils manage to lose three other hurlers on the same day: Larry Christenson pulls a groin muscle, Dick Ruthven goes on the disabled list, and Randy Lerch fractures his thumb in a brawl.
1985 - In a marathon game that borders on the surreal, the Mets endure two rain delays and 6:10 of playing time to beat the Braves, 16 - 13, in 19 innings on Fireworks Night in Atlanta. The Mets take a 10 - 8 lead in the top of the 13th inning, only to watch the Braves tie it up. The Mets score again in the 18th, but relief hurler Rick Camp (a .060 hitter who is batting because Atlanta has no more position players available to pinch-hit) ties the score with his first major league home run on a two-out, two-strike pitch in the bottom of the inning. No pitcher had ever homered that late in a game before. Finally, the Mets erupt for five runs in the 19th off Camp and Atlanta can respond only with 2. Keith Hernandez hits for the cycle for the Mets, and the game ends at 3:55 A.M. on July 5th, the latest finish in major league history. At 4:01 A.M., the post-game fireworks display begins, causing local residents to think the city is under attack.
2012: The Phillies' Cliff Lee finally earns his first win of the year in beating the Mets, 9 - 2. He is now 1-5 in 14 starts, and his lack of production has been one of the reasons the Phils have fallen behind the pace in the NL East.
