Dominguez hits 4th homer of season in loss
PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. (August 15, 2023) – The Jupiter Hammerheads overcame a one-run deficit in the top of the ninth to score six times in an 11-6 victory over the St. Lucie Mets on Tuesday at Clover Park (Box Score).
The Mets entered the ninth up 6-5 but were in immediate peril when Jan Mercado hit a leadoff double against Elliot Johnstone. Brett Roberts followed with a bunt single that set up runners at the corners. Jordan McCants then grounded a single into center field to score pinch runner Mark Coley and tie the game 6-6.
Kemp Alderman hit a sac fly deep to center that put the Hammerheads up 7-6. Ian Lewis broke the game open with a two-run triple for a 9-6 advantage. Brock Vradenburg singled home Lewis to make it 10-6. Vradenburg would later steal second and score on an error for the final run.
The Mets found themselves down 3-0 early but rallied to take the lead. Jefrey De Los Santos started the scoring with a RBI single in the third to cut the deficit to 3-1. Nick Lorusso belted a two-out RBI double in the fourth to make it 3-2. Carlos Dominguez homered on the next pitch from Tristan Stevens to put the Mets up 4-3.
McCants tied the game 4-4 with a RBI single in the fifth inning.
The Mets grabbed the lead right back in the bottom of the fifth on a Diego Mosquera run-scoring single.
Mets reliever Manny Alvarez threw a wild pitch that plated a runner from third base in the top of the sixth that tied the game again, 5-5.
The Mets had a big opportunity to score multiple runs in the bottom of the seventh. With the bases loaded and no outs, Wilfredo Lara hit what looked like a single into left-center field. De Los Santos scored on the play to put the Mets up 6-5, but Mosquera was thrown out by center fielder Jake DeLeo at third base for a force out. Lara was credited with a fielder’s choice RBI instead of a hit. Euri Montero struck out the next two batters to end the inning and limit the Mets to one run.
De Los Santos went 2 for 5 with a triple, RBI and run.
Karell Paz went 2 for 4 for the second consecutive game.
Mets starter Douglas Orellana was charged with four runs on seven hits over 4.2 innings. He struck out seven and did not walk a batter in taking a no-decision.
Montero pitched 2.0 scoreless and hitless innings to get the win.
The Hammerheads pounded out 14 hits. Vradenburg was 3 for 5.
The Mets (37-71, 13-30) and Hammerheads (56-53, 21-22) continue their series on Wednesday. First pitch at Clover Park is scheduled for 2:10 p.m.
