Game Recap: Binghamton Gets Blanked in Somerset on Friday

BRIDGEWATER, N.J. – The Binghamton Rumble Ponies (18-18, 53-52) were shutout by the Somerset Patriots, 9-0, on Friday night at TD Bank Ballpark. The series is now tied 2-2.

Drew Thorpe (1-0) made his Double-A debut on the mound for Somerset (20-16, 62-42) and was dominant. Thorpe tossed eight scoreless innings with nine strikeouts, while allowing just two hits and no walks.

Luisangel Acuña led off the game with a single and Thorpe retired the next 20 batters in a row. Thorpe faced 25 batters in eight innings, which is one over the minimum.

Josh Breaux slugged a two-run homer in the second inning to give the Patriots a 2-0 lead. Ben Rice followed with a three-run homer in the third inning to make it 5-0. Rice has six hits and two three-run homers over the past two games.

Somerset scored a run in each of its final four innings offensively. Rice hit an RBI double in the fifth to make it 6-0. Aaron Palensky drove in Max Burt with a sacrifice fly in the sixth that made it 7-0. Elijah Dunham hit a solo homer in the seventh that made it 8-0 and Jesus Bastidas homered in the eighth to make it 9-0.

The Rumble Ponies will continue their series with the Patriots at TD Bank Ballpark on Saturday night. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. and pregame coverage will begin at 6:50 p.m. on the WNBF Rumble Ponies Radio Network.

Postgame Notes: Matt O’Neill drew a walk to lead off the ninth against reliever Lisandro Santos…Joey Lancellotti struck out three batters in 2.2 innings of relief…The Ponies moved two games back of Somerset for first place in the Northeast Division.
