St. Lucie snap 5-game losing streak

PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. (August 11, 2023) – The St. Lucie Mets snapped a five-game losing skid with an impressive 6-3 victory over the Palm Beach Cardinals on Friday night at Clover Park (Box Score).

Mets starter Saul Garcia pitched a career-high 5.1 innings allowed just two runs on three singles. He walked two and struck out five in earning his fourth win of the season. Garcia retired nine batters in a row at one point.

The Mets broke a scoreless tie by scoring four runs in the fourth inning off Cardinals starter Brycen Mautz. Kevin Villavicencio started the scoring with a two-run double. Fernando Villalobos plated Villavicencio on a sac fly to make it 3-0. Jefrey De Los Santos yanked a RBI double to right field for a 4-0 advantage.

Mautz had not allowed a run in his previous three starts. He took the loss, allowing four runs on seven hits over 5.0 innings.

The Cardinals scored twice in the sixth on a run-scoring ground out and a two-out RBI single by Michael Curialle that made it 4-2.

Manny Alvarez pitched a rocky seventh inning on a minor league rehab assignment. He balked in a run that made it 4-3 but recovered to strike out Dakota Harris to end the inning and strand the tying run on third and the go-ahead run on second.

De Los Santos gave the Mets breathing room by clubbing a two-run homer in the bottom of the seventh to extend the lead to 6-3. It was his fifth homer of the year.

Miguel Alfonseca pitched a scoreless eighth and ninth inning to finish off the Cardinals for his second save. Alfonseca struck out four batters and made a behind-the-back catch on a ground ball comebacker from Won-Bin Cho to end the game.

De Los Santos went 2 for 4 with a homer, double and three RBI to lead the Mets at the plate.

Villavicencio went 2 for 4 and extended his hitting streak to seven games.

The Mets (36-69, 12-28) and Cardinals (55-48, 18-20) play the fifth game of their series at Clover Park on Saturday. First pitch is 6:10 p.m. There will be postgame fireworks.
