Game scoreless through 9 innings as Orellana and Hawkins shine

TAMPA, Fla. (September 2, 2023) – The St. Lucie Mets lost a heartbreaking 2-1 game to the Tampa Tarpons in 10 innings on Saturday night at Steinbrenner Field (Box Score).

The Mets pitched their best nine-inning game of the season as starter Douglas Orellana and reliever Dakota Hawkins shut out the Tarpons in regulation and limited the Tarpons to just three base runners through the first nine innings.

Tampa starter Sean Hermann was equally as good, as he pitched 8.0 shutout innings.

The game went to the 10th inning with no score. The Mets were in danger of stranding the free runner but Nick Lorusso came up with a two-out RBI double to plate Karell Paz for a 1-0 lead.

The Tarpons answered in the home 10th. Josh Moylan drew a leadoff walk from Bryce Jenkins to put runners on first and second. Dylan Jasso then came to the plate and dunked a ball into shallow right field just out of the reach of the right fielder Paz and the first baseman Yohairo Cuevas. The free runner Roc Riggio scored on the play to tie the game 1-1. Moylan ended up at third base as the winning run.

Tayler Aguilar hit a ground ball that deflected off the glove of diving second baseman Diego Mosquera for the game-winning single that brought in Moylan for the walk-off win.

The Mets lost for the eighth straight game and dropped to 1-7 in extra inning games.

The Mets had several chances to score in regulation. They had a runner at second base with no outs in three different innings but could not come up with a big hit against Hermann. They went 0 for 9 with runners in scoring position in the first nine innings and 1 for 13 with RISP overall.

Orellana was electric in taking a no-decision. He pitched 6.2 innings of shutout ball and allowed just two singles. He walked one and struck out eight. Jackson Castillo singled as the second batter in the first inning. Orellana then proceeded to retire 15 in a row before Manuel Palencia singled with one out in the sixth.

Orellana was on the verge of becoming the first St. Lucie pitcher to go 7.0 innings. He walked Jasso with two outs in the seventh and was replaced by Hawkins.

Hawkins retired all seven batters he faced to pitch 2.1 perfect innings.

The Tarpons did not have runner reach second base between the second and ninth innings.

Hermann was ultra efficient for Tampa. He only needed 71 pitches to throw 8.0 innings.

The most remarkable inning was the top of the sixth. Hermann’s first pitch of the inning was hit for a single by Marco Vargas. Two pitches later Hermann plunked Nick Morabito to put runners at first and second. The next pitch was hit by Wilfredo Lara into a double play. The pitch after that was a fly out to center by Vincent Perozo to end the inning. Hermann only threw five total pitches in the inning.

Lorusso went 2 for 4 with a pair of doubles.

Mosquera went 2 for 4 with a double and single.

Tampa reliever Luis Arejula got the win. He worked around a runner at second with no outs in the ninth. He allowed the unearned run in the 10th but no more.

The Mets (40-82, 16-41) and Tarpons (60-63, 29-28) play their series finale at Steinbrenner Field on Sunday. First pitch is scheduled for 12:00 p.m.
