Press Release: Mets announce resignation of Billy Eppler "'I wanted David to have a clean slate and that meant me stepping down,' Eppler said.  'I hope for nothing but the best for the entire Mets organization.'"

Andy Martino.SNY.TV: Unpacking what just happened with the Mets, Billy Eppler, and the MLB investigation. The Mets did use the phantom IL this past season, according to multiple sources. "Earlier this week, Mets general manager Billy Eppler and new president of baseball operations David Stearns began the work of combining their lists of candidates for the team’s managerial vacancy, in addition to other key jobs in the organization...Stearns told Eppler to keep the big room; he would work in a smaller office nearby...Major League Baseball has opened an investigation into Eppler for improper use of the injured list (the investigation was first reported by the New York Post, and SNY can confirm it through league sources). The probe began as the result of a tip by a source who remains anonymous..."

After the club finishes in last place in each of his first three seasons in the dugout; the Mets extend manager Joe Torre’s contract through the 1982 season. During his five seasons with the team, the future Hall of Fame skipper will compile a 286-420 (.405) record for the struggling franchise.

David Cone ties a National League mark for strikeouts as he fans 19 Phillies en route to a 7-0 victory in the season's finale. The Mets right-hander finishes the campaign with a league-leading 241 strikeouts, making it second straight season he has led the circuit.

On Fan Appreciation Day at Shea Stadium, Howard Johnson drives in a run with a seventh-inning single to finish the season with a league-leading 117 RBIs. 'HoJo' is the first switch-hitter to lead the National League in runs batted in and the first Mets player to accomplish the feat.
