Mets Hire Carlos Mendoza as New Manager:

NY Post: Mets hiring Carlos Mendoza as new manager after Craig Counsell push. "Carlos Mendoza, who spent the last four seasons as the Yankees’ bench coach, was hired Monday by the Mets for their managerial vacancy...The hiring followed a courtship with Craig Counsell, who surprised the baseball world Monday by accepting a five-year contract worth $40 million from the Cubs..."

SNY.TV: Sources: Carlos Mendoza to receive three-year, approximately $4.5 million deal from Mets with fourth-year option

Jon Heyman NY Post: "to hire the second fiddle on the bench of their big Bronx brother team that’s coming off a season barely better than their own makes me question why they ever showed Buck Showalter the door in the first place."

Joel Sherman NY Post: Mets must give Carlos Mendoza chance to become their Craig Counsell. "The native Venenzuelan and former minor league infielder also is process oriented, structured and steeped in analytics, which should fit well with Stearns...the weight also is on Cohen and Stearns to create an environment for Mendoza to succeed. A manager’s job is to put the players in the best position; and it is the owner’s and president of baseball operation’s job to do the same with the manager."

NY Post: Who is new Mets manager Carlos Mendoza? Meet the ex-Yankees coach hired by David Stearns. "Worked his way up in the Yankees’ system...He filled in for Aaron Boone...Minor league baseball player...International roots..."

SNY.TV: Yankees’ Aaron Boone to SNY on new Mets manager Carlos Mendoza: 'He’s the complete package'

David Lennon Newsday: Mets hope for better luck with another first-time manager. "With Monday’s decision to go with Carlos Mendoza, formerly the Yankees’ bench coach, his hiring ups the Mets’ count to a stunning five managers now in six years. Of that group, Mendoza is the fourth first-timer to take the job. Jars of peanut butter have longer life spans."

Brian Joura Mets360: "...it’s curious that Eric Chavez couldn’t get an interview while the Mets turned around to hire a guy from outside the organization with no managerial experience. Because, you know, that worked so well with Mickey Callaway and Luis Rojas."

Metstradamus: Surprise! Craig Counsell Is NOT The Next Mets Manager. "But no matter how highly respected a baseball man you are, there are details as a manager that Mendoza will experience for the first time...There have been plenty of managers who have won after their first jobs...Since 1985...here have been eight managers that have won their first title in their first job."

Receiving 25-of-32 first-place votes, the BBWAA selects Rafael Furcal as the National League Rookie of the Year. The Braves shortstop, who is the only player listed on all 32 ballots, easily outdistances Cardinal pitcher Rick Ankiel and Mets outfielder Jay Payton.

2012

With a year remaining on his contract, outfielder Jason Bay is released by the Mets after three very disappointing seasons with New York. The move will not save the team any money as they will be responsible for the $21 million owed to the former National League Rookie of the Year, who signed a big free-agent deal with the club in 2009.
