Anthony Rieber Newsday: Mets' Edwin Diaz strikes out the side in first exhibition appearance. "Just under one year after suffering an unthinkable freak injury in the World Baseball Classic, the Mets’ closer faced three Miami batters and struck them all out on Monday night...Diaz’s first pitch was a 98-mph fastball that Miami’s Jesus Sanchez fouled off the helmet of Mets catcher Francisco Alvarez and right into the chest of plate umpire CB Bucknor...Then, on 3-and-2, Diaz struck out the lefthanded-hitting Sanchez on an unhittable inside slider. Diaz said that pitch is when he truly knew he was back."

Newsday: Massapequa to Mets: Mason Maier lives out dream of being a big leaguer for a day.  "Maier, who has been in remission from acute lymphoblastic leukemia for more than a year, got to stretch with the Mets, take fielding practice and step into the cage for batting practice wielding a brand-new bat given to him by his favorite player, Pete Alonso."

The second exhibition season bench-clearing brawl this week occurs when a raging Mike Piazza charges the mound after being hit by a pitch thrown by Guillermo Mota, who makes it to the dugout without being caught. The incident may be a follow-up to a similar event last spring when a shoving match between the two players resulted when the Mets' All-Star catcher waited for Mota and grabbed the Dodger reliever by the jersey as he was coming off the field in the eighth inning of the game.
