Mets make first Roster Cuts of Spring:
- OF Drew Gilbert, RHP Eric Orze, C Kevin Parada, RHP Cam Robinson, RHP Christian Scott, RHP Mike Vasil, INF Jett Williams and LHP Danny Young were all reassigned to minor league camp.
- INF Luisangel Acuña and LHP Kolton Ingram were optioned to Triple-A.
- Later in the day on X/Twitter, the Mets announced that Dom Hamel was also reassigned to minor league camp.
Tim Healey Newsday: Meet Joe Suozzi, son of congressman Tom, a Mets minor-leaguer with major heart. “'It’s been an advantage because I’ve been in these spots my whole career, dating back from high school, so I kind of understand what I need to do and how I need to learn at every level,' Suozzi, who was unrecruited out of high school, said recently after a Mets spring-training game. 'It’s tough not being a prospect. But I’ve been here twice already, so it makes it a lot easier. I’ve been lucky to have those things happen'...On the field, last season was Suozzi’s best, with his OPS improving each time they bumped him up a level: .683 with High-A Brooklyn to .739 with Double-A Binghamton to .767 with Triple-A Syracuse."
NY Post:
- Starling Marte’s 109.3 mph hit was stuck too hard to be more than single
- Mets veterans have set a standard in learning the ‘skill’ of durability Joel Sherman talks about Brandon Nimmo's recent durability "Part of the play smarter program these past few years is to ease into spring training and, thus, Nimmo delayed his first exhibition game until Sunday. Nimmo feels he has found a routine to build particularly his legs for a long season without leaving any of his game in the Grapefruit League."
- Carlos Mendoza in waiting game as tight battle for Mets bench spots unfolds "Contracts and experience dictate Omar Narváez will be the backup catcher, Tyrone Taylor the fourth outfielder and Wendle (health permitting) a backup, flexible infielder...That would leave two spots available from a group that includes Vientos, DJ Stewart, Zack Short, early camp standout Trayce Thompson and non-roster sluggers such as Luke Voit and Ji-Man Choi...Stewart (and Vientos) notably can still be optioned to the minor leagues, which could persuade the Mets to hold onto another player they would risk losing to waivers.
- Mets’ Sean Manaea looks unrecognizable after ‘impulsive’ haircut, shave
Mets.com:
- As Mets' longest-tenured arm, Smith ready for '24 "At 30 years old, [Drew Smith] is -- believe it or not -- the longest-tenured member of the Mets’ pitching staff, entering his final year of team control. (Among players expected to make the Opening Day roster, only outfielder Brandon Nimmo has been around longer.)"
- Game Story: Short, Gamel deliver RBI doubles ▶️
- Mets reduce roster; Smith, Díaz approaching debuts "Closer Edwin Díaz, who has thrown multiple live batting practice sessions this spring but has yet to appear in a game, will do so on the Minor League side on Tuesday. Once he completes that step, Díaz will graduate to Grapefruit League work...Fellow reliever Drew Smith is due to make his Grapefruit League debut Tuesday against the Yankees."
