Syracuse, NY – The Syracuse Mets ran into an Iowa Cubs buzzsaw offensively on Thursday night. The Cubs scored ten runs on 15 hits en route to a 10-4 win over the Mets on a sunny and mid-70s evening at NBT Bank Stadium. It was the first loss of the week for the Mets after they captured the first two games of the weeklong, six-game series against the Triple-A affiliate of the Chicago Cubs.
After a scoreless first, Iowa (20-22) bolted in front in the top of the second. A one-out triple from David Bote followed by Brennen Davis being plunked by a pitch put two runners on base with nobody out. Bryce Windham then singled in Bote, and after a BJ Murray Jr. pop out, Hayden Cantrelle singled in Davis to make it a 2-0 game. It was Cantrelle's first-career hit in Triple-A. The Louisiana native made his Triple-A debut earlier this week.
The Cubs ballooned their lead with three runs in the top of the fourth. Iowa sent eight men to the plate in the frame, which was highlighted by home runs from Brennen Davis (a solo shot) and a two-run blast from Murray Jr. That would prove to be the last inning for the Syracuse (24-16) starter, Justin Jarvis, who allowed five runs (all earned) on nine hits in four innings with two strikeouts. He has now allowed eight earned runs in 12 innings of work this season in Triple-A.
Iowa's starting pitcher, Cade Horton, entered the evening with plenty of hype. The 22-year-old from Oklahoma is widely considered one of the best pitching prospects in all of baseball. Horton certainly lived up to that hoopla in the first four innings, not allowing a hit while striking out three and walking just one.
In the fifth, the outing unraveled just a bit for Horton. The Mets scored three runs on four hits, featuring a Brosseau RBI double (his fifth extra-base hit in the last three games), a Jiman Choi sacrifice fly, and a Luisangel Acuña RBI single to slim the deficit to 5-3. Horton left the game after the fifth inning – his final line was three runs (all earned) on four hits in five innings with one walk and three strikeouts.
Iowa's offense got right back to work after that, scoring twice in the sixth and once in the seventh to continue to boost their lead. In the sixth, another Murray Jr. home run plus a two-out RBI double from Owen Caissie (he drove in Darius Hill, who had singled earlier in the inning) plated two runs for the Cubs.
In the seventh, David Bote launched a solo shot starting the inning to add the eighth run onto the scoreboard for Iowa. In the ninth, the Cubs put it away on a two-out, two-run double from Cantrelle that scored their ninth and tenth runs on the evening. By the end of the game, eight of the nine Iowa Cubs batters had at least one hit, six of them had at least two hits, and five different players scored at least one run.
Meanwhile, the Mets' offense struggled down the stretch. Syracuse scored just once in the final four innings – a two-out RBI single from José Iglesias would be all the Mets would get in the later stages of the game. Syracuse did have its chances, stranding four runners on base in the final four innings while collecting four hits. The Mets left six runners on base in the game.
Syracuse is finally home after two long weeks on the road. This week's series against the Triple-A affiliate of the Chicago Cubs, the Iowa Cubs, continues on Friday at 6:35 p.m. from NBT Bank Stadium. Right-hander Dom Hamel is expected to start for the Mets against right-hander Dan Straily for the Cubs.

Please don't blink while watching this highlight. Otherwise, you'll miss Luisangel's RBI infield single. pic.twitter.com/ueytRM1uoT
