  • Mets: 
    • Suffered their first series loss since they were swept by Los Angeles-NL from May 28-29...Had won or split their previous eight series.
    • Are 3-8 in extra-inning games this season. 
    • Have lost consecutive games for the first time since June 1 -2. 
    • Finished June 16-8 (.667), their best winning percentage in the month since they went 18-8 (.692) in 2010. 
  • Mark Vientos: Put the Mets on the board with a two-run double in the sixth...Has a .925 OPS over his last 24 games dating back to May 31...Since the time of his recall, May 15, ranks fifth among major league third baseman with 23 RBI.
  • Brandon Nimmo: Lined a game-tying two-run homer in the seventh...Was the 100th home run of his career...Became the 16th player in franchise history to reach the 100-career home run mark...Has hit a career-high-tying 13 home runs before the All-Star Break for the third time in his career (Also: 2018 and 2023)...Extended his on-base streak to 15 games after drawing a walk in the first...Recorded a game-tying RBI double in the 10th...Was his first hit and RBI in extra-innings this season.

NY Post: Mets fall to Astros in extras after nearly three-hour rain delay as thin bullpen exposed again.  "In the rubber game, they trailed the Astros by four, began the comeback in the sixth inning, tied it in the seventh but lost the contest in extra innings."

Anthony Rieber Newsday: Mets fall to Astros in 11 innings after nearly three-hour rain delay. "After a delay of 2 hours, 47 minutes, play resumed with the Mets ready to walk it off and reward the hometown fans among the crowd of 26,853 who stayed throughout the long delay.  But the Mets ended up falling to the Astros in 11 innings, 10-5, as Houston scored five runs against reliever Matt Festa, who the Mets had just called up on Sunday morning for their depleted bullpen."

David Lennon Newsday: Mets need to sort out pitching woes if they want to stay in wild-card race. "This weekend series may have kicked off with Jose Iglesias’ flash “OMG” concert, but it ended with a cry for help. And from a pitching perspective, we’d expect that to only get louder in the stressful days ahead."

New York Mets traded Charlie Neal and Sammy Taylor to the Cincinnati Reds for Jesse Gonder on July 1, 1963.

New York Mets released Al Weis on July 1, 1971.

New York Mets signed free agent Alex Escobar on July 1, 1995.

New York Mets traded Roberto Alomar to the Chicago White Sox for Royce Ring, Edwin Almonte and Andrew Salvo on July 1, 2003.

1943
Although the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League will not have an official All-Star Game until 1946, two teams, one composed of South Bend Blue Sox and Rockford Peaches players and the other made up of players from the Kenosha Comets and Racine Belles, put on an exhibition game under the lights at Wrigley Field. The AAGPBL contest is the first night game ever played in the historic Chicago ballpark.

Woody Fryman faces the minimum 27 batters in the Pirates' 12-0 rout of the Mets at Shea Stadium. New York leadoff hitter Ron Hunt singles to center to start the bottom of the first, but is tagged out trying to swipe second base.

2013
Before the game at Citi Field, the Mets and Diamondbacks honor the 19 firefighters killed while battling a wildfire in Yarnell, Arizona with a moment of silence. Additionally, each team hangs a jersey with the word Yarnell stitched on the back above the number 19 in their respective dugouts.


Baseball Reference:

1973: At Wrigley Field, the Mets edge the Cubs, 6 - 5, in the first game of a doubleheader. Then it is the Cubs' turn, as Randy Hundley bangs a 9th inning 3-run homer to give Chicago the 6 - 5 edge. Ron Santo has seven hits for the afternoon, five in the nitecap.

1998 - Trailing the Mets, 8 - 7, in the bottom of the 8th inning, Toronto comes up with eight runs. New York fights back with two in their half of the 9th, but the Blue Jays hold on for a 15 - 10 triumph.

2009: Is the era of high scoring over ? For the first time since September 1, 1976, three National League games end in 1 - 0 scores on the same day. All of the shutouts are combined efforts: Mike Pelfrey of the Mets beats Milwaukee, Johnny Cueto leads the Reds over Arizona, and the Dodgers defeat Colorado with an 8th-inning run.
