PRESS RELEASE: METS ACQUIRE RHP PAUL BLACKBURN


FLUSHING, N.Y., July 30, 2024 – The New York Mets today announced they have acquired RHP Paul Blackburn from the Oakland Athletics in exchange for minor league right-handed pitcher Kade Morris. The 6-1, 196-pounder is a free agent following the 2025 season.

 

The 30-year-old pitcher has made nine starts this year, going 4-2 with a 4.41 ERA (25 ER/51.0 IP) with 14 walks and 38 strikeouts. Blackburn began the season with a scoreless streak of 22.1 innings, the longest scoreless streak in franchise history by an Athletics starter to begin the season. Blackburn became the ninth pitcher in major league history since 1914 to throw 6.0 or more scoreless innings in each of his first three starts of the season.

 

The right-handed pitcher was on the on the injured list from May 13 – July 26 with a stress reaction of the fifth metatarsal of his right foot.

 

The Antioch, CA native was originally selected in the first round (56th overall) by the Chicago Cubs in the 2012 First-Year Player Draft. He has spent all eight major league seasons with the Oakland A's, going 21-26 with a 4.83 ERA (217 ER/404.0 IP) with 125 walks and 308 strikeouts across 81 games (77 starts).

 

Morris, 22, went 4-6 with a 3.51 ERA (36 ER/92.1 IP) over 18 games (16 starts) combined between Single-A St. Lucie and High-A Brooklyn. The 6-3, 190-pounder was originally selected by the Mets in the third round of the 2023 First-Year Player from the University of Nevada.
