BROOKLYN,NY (August 11, 2024) – The Brooklyn Cyclones swept Sunday's doubleheader to earn a series split against the Hudson Valley Renegades. Brooklyn captured the opener, 4-2, in come-from-behind fashion, before snatching a 3-1 victory in the back half of the twin bill. The sweep marks Brooklyn's second double header sweep of the season, and improves their record in doubleheaders 2-1-3.
The 'Clones received two-run home runs from both William Lugo (in Game 1) and Junior Tilien (in Game 2). Brooklyn limited Hudson Valley to only seven total hits through 14 innings.
The Cyclones took Game One of Sunday’s doubleheader by the score of 4-2 over the Hudson Valley Renegades. The ‘Clones scored two in the sixth and a pair in the seventh to crawl back from an early 2-0 hole to get the win.
RHP Dakota Hawkins made the start for Brooklyn and tossed 5.2 solid frames, allowing two runs on five hits while striking out five, but did not factor in the decision. LHP Ryan Ammons (2-0) closed out the win with 1.1 scoreless frames, striking out two of the four batters he faced to collect the win.
Hudson Valley jumped out to an early lead when back-to-back doubles from C Omar Martinez and 1B Dylan Jasso in the top of the 2nd put runners on second and third with nobody out before DH Jackson Castillo supplied an RBI groundout that made it 1-0 in favor of the Renegades.
After a scoreless third, CF Jace Avina cracked his 10th home run of the season to lead off the top of the fourth and extend the Hudson Valley lead to 2-0.
That how it would stay until the bottom of the fifth when the Cyclones bats finally came to life. Renegades starter RHP Cade Smith retired the first 14 batters he faced before LF Jefrey De Los Santos worked a two-out walk in the bottom of the fifth and SS William Lugo followed with a monstrous two-run home run over the video board in left-centerfield to knot things up at 2-2.
In the bottom of the sixth, the ‘Clones would take the lead for good when 2B Kevin Villavicencio scored on a wild pitch that made it 3-2. DH D’Andre Smith tacked on an insurance run with an RBI single that made the final score 4-2.
The second half of the doubleheader saw Brooklyn grab a 3-1 victory in a game in which they never trailed. RHP Jawilme Ramirez did not allow a hit until the fourth inning. He'd finish with a strong final line of 3.2 innings of one-run ball, giving up only one hit while permitting two walks and striking out four. The only real blemish on his line was an RBI double from CF Jackson Castillo.
Beyond Ramirez, RHPs Jordany Ventura and Alan Perdomo were superb out of Brooklyn's bullpen. The duo combined for 3.1 hitless perfect innings. Ventura collected the win, while Perdomo notched the save.
RHP Trent Sellers saw his consecutive scoreless inning streak come to an end at 20.0 frames. The reigning South Atlantic League Pitcher of the Month was tagged for two runs over 2.2 innings en route to taking the loss.
Brooklyn grabbed the lead on a two-run blast from 3B Junior Tilien. The long ball marked his fifth of the season, and first since July 2nd - also against Hudson Valley.
Hudson Valley notched its lone tally one frame later, on Castillo's RBI double.
The Cyclones proceeded to get the run back in the sixth, on a sacrifice fly from C Christian Pregent, to make the score 3-1, which would hold for the final.
Brooklyn returns to action following Monday's league-wide off-day, when it travels to Wilmington to open up a six game set with the Blue Rocks. First pitch is set for 6:35 p.m. Probable pitchers have yet to be announced by either squad.
