Francisco Alvarez:
  • Crushed a home run in the ninth inning to give the Mets a 4-3 walk-off win...It was his first career walk-off home run and hit...Was his first home runs since July 26 vs. Atlanta.
Mark Vientos:
  • Singled in the first inning to extend his hitting streak to a career-high seven games...He also has recorded a hit in 11 straight games at Citi Field.
David Peterson:
  • Pitched 7.0 innings which is his longest outing of the season...Recorded eight strikeouts which matches a season high (Also: 6/26/24 vs. Yankees)...Established a career high with seven quality starts.
Tyrone Taylor:
  • Ripped a single that drove in one in the fourth inning to put the Mets up 3-0...Is now hitting .304 (17-56) since July 24.
Brian Joura Mets360: "The Mets blew a 3-0 lead but Francisco Alvarez made sure that they didn’t lose the game, as he delivered his first walk-off hit, a 421-foot homer, giving the club a 4-3 win in the opening game of the three-game series against the Orioles. With the Braves having the night off, the Mets pulled within 1.5 games of Atlanta for the third Wild Card spot."

Newsday: "Before the homer, the Mets had not gotten a hit since Tyrone Taylor’s two-out RBI single in the fourth gave them a 3-0 lead. They struck out 11 times in the fifth through ninth innings and 14 times overall."

NY Post: David Peterson's latest Mets outing leaves Carlos Mendoza raving "He tossed a season-high seven innings, and were it not for a fluky balk that scored a run and briefly threw Peterson off his game, his line would have been even better."

1963
In his first major league start, Grover Powell blanks the Phillies in the Mets' 4-0 victory at Connie Mack Stadium. The shutout will be the only big league win for the 21 year-old right-hander, who after pitching four more scoreless innings in his next appearance will appear to lose his effectiveness when he is struck in the face by a line drive hit by Pittsburgh first baseman Donn Clendenon.
1985
Dwight Gooden, going the distance in the Mets' 3-0 victory over San Francisco at Shea Stadium en route to his 13th consecutive win, whiffs 16 batters to become the first National League pitcher to strike out 200 or more batters in each of his first two seasons. The 20 year-old sophomore, who improves his record to 19-3 with his sixth shutout of the year, matches the feat accomplished by Herb Score of the Indians in the American League in 1955 and 1956.

1989
It's a busy day on the trading block for the Mets as they send popular outfielder Mookie Wilson to the Blue Jays for pitcher Jeff Musselman and minor leaguer Michael Brady. New York also gets Frank Viola from the Twins for pitchers Rick Aguilera, David West, and Kevin Tapani and two minor leaguers.
1998
At Shea Stadium, Cardinal first baseman Mark McGwire becomes the first player in major league history to hit fifty home runs in three consecutive seasons. Mac's seventh-inning solo shot, the second of back-to-back round-trippers off Willie Blair, helps to defeat the Mets, 2-0.

1989Howard Johnson hits his 30th home run of the season in the Mets' 5 - 4 loss to the Dodgers and joins Bobby Bonds and Willie Mays as the only players to achieve 30 home runs and 30 stolen bases in two different seasons.
