1/16/2025: Report - Mets to resign Jesse WinkerPer Joel Sherman on X: "Jesse Winker deal is actually 1 yr for $7.5M with a chance to reach $9M via bonuses."

NY Post: Mets bringing back Jesse Winker after electric stint. "Winker, 31, saw his production drop with the Mets in the second half, with a .683 OPS after a strong first half with the Nationals, but he excelled in the playoffs, with a 1.168 OPS in 10 postseason games."

NY Post: Mets think Pete Alonso is a goner as they begin Plan B. "An agreement to retain Jesse Winker for one year at $7.5 million Thursday began a Mets pivot away from Alonso and the internal belief is that he will now sign elsewhere."

NY Post: What the Mets were offering Pete Alonso before talks broke down. "The Mets made what they perceived as a last-ditch effort to sign Pete Alonso by offering him a three-year contract in the $68 million-$70 million range, and when that was rejected, began their pivot away from their slugging first baseman, The Post has learned. The first step was to add another bat by re-signing Jesse Winker for one year at $7.5 million. They now will try to bolster their pen by playing at the top of the relief market, and the No. 1 asset available is lefty Tanner Scott."

Will Sammon The Athletic Mets considering pivot from Pete Alonso, re-sign Jesse Winker to one-year deal: Sources. "Earlier on Thursday, The Athletic reported that the Mets are in active talks with other players and it would be difficult to fit Alonso into their plans if they strike a deal in other pursuits, a person familiar with the Mets’ plans said." Joel Sherman NY Post Sports+: Pete Alonso is ‘one more thing’ Steve Cohen can live without now. "[Mets President of Baseball Operations David] Stearns does not want to be in long-term business with non-athletic corner players in their thirties. He also firmly believes that there are many routes to building a championship-contending roster and locking yourself into any “one more thing” thinking is foolish. And — most important in this moment — he has Cohen’s ear and trust, which was only galvanized with Stearns’ discipline in forming a roster that reached the NLCS last year." (Subscription required)

Jon Heyman NY Post Sports+: Mets’ potential Pete Alonso divorce would have major Brett Baty ramifications. "With the Mets and Pete Alonso still far apart monetarily and a parting looking likely now, the Mets may well stay internal for the starting infield spot. Which means Brett Baty has an excellent chance to get his third chance at third base, especially with Ronnie Mauricio coming off an injury year." (Subscription Required)

Mike Vaccaro NY Post Sports+: The Mets better have a Plan B in place. "Are the Mets better off with Alonso at first, or are they better off doing what is the plan for the moment (which is the only one we can work with): moving Mark Vientos to first and rolling the dice that any of Brett Baty, Ronny Mauricio and Luisangel Acuña can seize third base?" MLB.com: Here are the Top 10 first base prospects for 2025. #7 Ryan Clifford. They included Ryan on the players with the best Arm Strength and Most to prove saying: "Clifford struggled in High-A to begin last season before batting .231/.359/.456 with 18 homers in 98 Double-A games. But he also struck out at 30 percent clip overall (29 percent in Double-A) and he'll need to demonstrate that he can make consistent contact against upper-level pitching."
