Good Morning. Happy Birthday to Todd Frazier, Lenny Randle, and Guillermo Granadillo. Carlos Mendoza gives lots of updates as he speaks to the media, Kodai Senga says he's healthy and more from Mets Spring Training.
Section Links: Mets Links, MLB Links and This Day in Mets History.
Tim Healey Newsday: Mets' Jeff McNeil begins camp as likely Opening Day second baseman, but Carlos Mendoza keeping options open. "Mendoza hedged on the question of whether McNeil is the no-doubt starter, saying that he is “going to play a huge role” and “get a lot of opportunities” for the Mets in 2025. But Mendoza also mentioned Brett Baty, Luisangel Acuna and recently signed utility infielder Nick Madrigal (and prospect Jett Williams) among those who also will get chances at second during camp."
David Lennon Newsday Mets manager Carlos Mendoza seeks extra charge in his electric 2024 performance. "Almost overnight, Mendoza...is back to feeling championship pressure in pinstripes, only now they’re royal blue instead of navy. The Mets rallied last season once they hit rock bottom and finally agreed to play like they had nothing to lose. They don’t have that luxury this time around, especially after owner Steve Cohen just spent $765 million on Juan Soto this winter, and when the stakes are raised to that degree, the heat gets turned up, and it can be difficult to predict the impact."
Newsday: Mets Spring Training Photos.
Jon Heyman NY Post Sports+: The Mets upgrade Steve Cohen’s World Series prediction may rest on. "This may be a long shot even for them, but Steve Cohen’s Mets should try hard for the Padres’ Dylan Cease...Cease is as reliable as he is talented. He led the league in games started three of the past four years, and he came one strikeout short of National League leader Chris Sale last year, with 224 strikeouts." (Subscription required)
Mike Puma NY Post: Mets’ Carlos Mendoza glad to have Pete Alonso and his durability back. “You don’t have to worry about him — there is a lot of days where he is not feeling at his best and he’s still going to post,” Mendoza said. “Last year, there were days when I didn’t feel he was going to be a player for us and he kept pushing it and ‘I’m playing,’ so that’s what I feel.”
NY Post Sports+: Here’s an inside look at some issues facing the Mets as the 2025 season approaches. They say Brandon Sproat is the most intriguing minor leaguer in camp, wonder how Carlos Mendoza will compile the lineup and say this about Luisangel Acuna: "As the Mets are presently constructed, there is probably room for only one backup infielder, and if Acuña isn’t going to play regularly, the spot could be a better fit for Nick Madrigal or Jared Young, with younger players such as Acuña and Ronny Mauricio (who is returning after missing all of last year) beginning the season at Triple-A Syracuse."
