Good Morning. Happy Birthday Justin Verlander and Luis Severino. Clay Holmes named Spring Opener Starting Pitcher, Frankie Montas takes a shot, and Ronny Mauricio feeling good.

Tim Healey Newsday: Mets' Matt Allan, forgotten pitching prospect, finally healthy and returning to games. "Allan, 23 years old and more than five years removed from when he last pitched in a real game, is healthy now. He is in minor-league spring training as a normal and non-rehabbing player, throwing — and throwing hard — alongside fellow pitchers, on the brink of returning to game action with a Mets affiliate come April...In his recent sessions against batters - other Mets minor-leaguers - Allan’s fastball has been up to 97 mph...Allan is due to be a minor-league free agent after this season, but the Mets can keep him by adding him to the 40-man roster. So the coming months are critical."
Abbey Mastracco NY Daily News: Clay Holmes to start Grapefruit League opener for Mets, aims to throw 40-45 pitches. "Holmes hasn’t made a Major League start since 2018, and while a Grapefruit League game doesn’t exactly carry the same weight as a regular season game, it’s a chance for the right-hander to get back into the swing of things as a starter, going through his pregame routine, getting up three times and throwing about 40-45 pitches."
Mike Puma NY Post: Clay Holmes to start Mets’ spring training opener: ‘Great spot’. "Holmes said being this far along so early in camp is a relief. 'It kind of eases some of that in your mind you don’t have to add on a ton each [start],' Holmes said. 'You don’t feel like you have two starts left and you have to [increase] by 30 or 40 pitches.'"
Newsday: Why was Mets' attendance down in 2024? Fans offer Steve Cohen a few reasons. "Mostly, lowered expectations after the 2023 season, when the Mets temporarily pivoted away from Cohen’s free-spending ways. And a slow start to the 2024 season...What made the fans come back in droves for the final regular-season series against the Phillies and the playoffs was something simple. Winning."
Mike Puma NY Post: Jose Siri brings elite defense, ‘chaos’ to Mets while trying to improve anemic bat. "Jose Siri’s speed and defense are elite...Upon his arrival to camp, Siri told manager Carlos Mendoza his goal is to improve his plate discipline. Last season, Siri’s chase rate of 35.2 percent placed him in MLB’s 12th percentile, according to Statcast. His whiff rate (swing and miss) was 41.9 percent, placing him in the first percentile."
Joel Sherman NY Sports+: How Steve Cohen’s Juan Soto coup upended 40-year New York baseball trend. "It did not need to be emitted from [Juan Soto's] mouth. It came when he put pen to contractual paper. When he spurned a place he knew well from his year there — after going to the World Series. When he decided the franchise that has dominated New York baseball for three-plus decades and has the greatest legacy in North American team sports was not where he wanted to spend the rest of his playing life, but rather that he wanted to go across the RFK Bridge to where sustained winning has never happened..."(subscription required)
Tim Britton The Athletic: How Brandon Nimmo responded to a brutal second-half slump. "Nimmo felt better in time for the postseason...The numbers backed that up: His barrel and hard-hit rates were in line with his first-half numbers...That helped provide some confidence going into a winter he spent largely at the Mets facility with co-hitting coach Jeremy Barnes. Nimmo used the Mets hitting lab as much as his recovering foot would allow as he looked to streamline his swing. There’s a smaller leg-kick now and, according to Barnes, the swing is a little more adjustable." (subscription required)
Will Sammon The Athletic: Mets begin search for the next Dedniel Núñez, a surprise contributor in the bullpen. "Some candidates include right-handers Luis Moreno (grabbed the attention of rival scouts by becoming the Dominican Winter League’s rookie of the year), Jonathan Pintaro (quickly worked his way from High-A Brooklyn to Double-A Binghamton to Triple-A Syracuse. Across the three levels, he had a 2.68 ERA in 74 innings) and Ryan Lambert (In two appearances with High-A Brooklyn in 2024, Lambert hit 100 mph with his fastball a few times, throwing as hard as 100.7 mph). subscription required)
Anthony DiComo Mets.com: Brimming with potential, nearly healthy Mauricio can 'finally see the light'. "It would have been difficult for anyone on the Clover Park back fields last Friday to harbor concern about the state of Ronny Mauricio. Stepping into the cage for batting practice, Mauricio homered multiple times from the right side of the plate. Minutes later, he turned around and did it again from the left side."
