NY Post: Mets’ infield depth takes hit with Nick Madrigal injury. "Nick Madrigal became the Mets’ first position player casualty of spring training on Sunday. Playing in West Palm Beach, Fla., as part of a Mets split-squad against the Nationals, the infielder sustained a dislocated left shoulder as he fell during an off-balance fielding play."

Abbey Mastracco NY Daily News: Mets Notebook: Infielder Nick Madrigal dislocates shoulder. "The Mets don’t have a timeline yet, with Madrigal set to undergo imaging Monday. That leaves Brett Baty, Luisangel Acuña and Donnie Walton to compete for the utility infield role. Madrigal was a stop-gap player the Mets were hoping to use until Acuña became a viable option."

NY Post: Mets’ Luisangel Acuña doing everything he can to prove late season success wasn’t fluke. "Acuña is trying to become more disciplined with pitch selection. He said one of his goals in Venezuela was to refine his approach on low-and-away pitches...Acuña said he worked out over the winter with older brother Ronald Acuña Jr., with a focus on hitting."

NY Post: Sean Manaea sought advice from idol Johan Santana as former ace made rare Mets camp appearance. "Fellow lefties Sean Manaea and David Peterson are among the Mets pitchers who have sought Santana’s counsel...Growing up, Manaea said he idolized the two-time Cy Young award winner, whose career was built on his mastery of the changeup...Santana has mostly remained out of public view since his retirement...but his friendship with fellow Venezuelan Carlos Mendoza led to the visit to spring training this weekend. Mendoza first mentioned the idea to Santana last season, when the Mets played in Miami and Santana was visiting."

Tim Healey Newsday: Mets' Sean Manaea meets 'childhood hero' Johan Santana. "Mendoza recently learned via the team’s social-media accounts that Santana was Manaea’s favorite back in the day, and he made the introduction happen. Manaea described himself as “star-struck.”

Joel Sherman NY Post Sports+: Mets’ Clay Holmes has never been given a starting chance quite like this. "Obviously, there is still much to prove, namely about endurance in holding stuff longer in games and making start after start. But this isn’t Pittsburgh in 2018. Holmes already has shown the ability to apply current teaching, and the Mets are not going to yank him from the rotation quickly if things do not go well." (subscription required)

New York Mets traded George Stone to the Texas Rangers for Bill Hands on February 24, 1976.

New York Mets signed free agent Rod Barajas of the Toronto Blue Jays on February 24, 2010.

Atlanta Braves claimed Guillermo Heredia of the New York Mets on waivers on February 24, 2021.

From National Pastime.com:

1966

The Braves sign the University of Southern California hurler Tom Seaver, but Commissioner William Eckert nullifies the contract due to rules that govern the signing of college players. The right-hander, who is declared ineligible by USC, will become available to any team, except Atlanta, willing to match the original contract in a lottery, which the Mets will win that also included bids by the Indians and the Phillies.
