Game Recap: Blue Jays blank St. Lucie Mets 3-0, Dedniel Nunez returns

Nunez pitches 1.2 scoreless inning in MiLB rehab assignment

DUNEDIN, Fla. (May 28, 2022) – The Dunedin Blue Jays shut out the St. Lucie Mets 3-0 on Saturday at TD Ballpark. (Box Score)

Glenn Santiago hit a two-out RBI double in the second inning to put the Jays on the board. Gabby Martinez crushed a solo home run in the fourth inning to make it 2-0. It was his third home run of the series.

Martinez hit a run-scoring single in the bottom of the eighth inning for an insurance run.

Mets starter Robert Colina (0-1) pitched well but took the loss. He tossed 5.1 innings and gave up just three hits and two runs. He walked one and struck out four.

Dedniel Nunez, recovering from Tommy John surgery, pitched 1.2 scoreless innings on MiLB rehab assignment in his first game back. Nunez was taken by the San Francisco Giants in the Rule 5 draft in 2020 and was set to make the Giants big league roster last year out of spring training before the elbow injury. The Giants returned Nunez to the Mets last November.

Carlos Dominguez and William Lugo both went 2 for 4. They were the only Mets with hits.

The Mets have been held to one run, a Kevin Villavicencio solo homer, in the last two games.

The Mets (28-16) wrap up their six-game series with the Blue Jays (20-14) and their 12-game, 13-game road trip on Sunday. The Mets need a win to finish the trip with a .500 record. First pitch at TD Ballpark is scheduled for noon.
