Gonzalez, McLoughlin combine for 5.0 shutout innings of relief in loss
PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. (July 15, 2022) – The Blue Jays shut out the St. Lucie Mets 4-0 on Friday at Clover Park to snap the Mets' four-game winning streak. (Box Score)
Four pitchers combined for the Dunedin shutout. Starter Connor Cooke logged 3.1 innings, Wilgenis Alvarado pitched 3.2 innings to get the win, Kelvin Perez pitched a perfect eighth and Ben Baggett pitched a 1-2-3 ninth to close out the game.
The Mets had runners on second and third base with two outs in the first, second and third innings. They loaded the bases with two outs in the fourth inning. Each time either Cooke or Alvarado was able to escape the jam.
William Lugo hit a 102 mph lineout to shortstop Estiven Machado to end the fourth, leaving the bases loaded.
The Mets only had one runner reach base over the final five innings, a one-out single by Eduardo Salazar in the sixth. The Mets went 0 for 8 with runners in scoring position and stranded 10.
The Blue Jays pounced on Mets starter Robert Colina for three runs in the first inning. Machado hit a RBI triple, Gabby Martinez brought home a run on a fielder's choice and Emmanuel Sanchez hit a sac fly.
Colina settled in and only allowed one run over his next three innings, a RBI single by Sanchez that made it 4-0 in the third.
Colina (0-5) took the loss. He gave up four runs on six hits in four innings. He walked two and struck out five.
Saul Gonzalez pitched three scoreless innings of relief. Trey McLoughlin pitched a perfect eighth and ninth.
Junior Tilien went 2 for 4 at the plate.
The Mets (51-33, 11-8) and Blue Jays (37-47, 9-9) play the fifth game of their series at Clover Park on Saturday. It's Marvel Defenders of the Diamond Night. The Mets will were special Captain America jerseys and there will be other Marvel related fun. First pitch is 6:10 p.m.
