SNY.TV: Edwin Diaz bounces back, Brett Baty reaches base twice as Mets fall to Red Sox. "David Peterson gave up a leadoff homer but limited the damage after that...Brandon Nimmo was back in the lineup for the first time since missing over a week of game action due to a knee issue that required a gel injection. In his first at-bat, Nimmo smoked a single to right field...Edwin Diaz allowed a leadoff double before settling in to retire the next three batters on a fly out, strikeout swinging, and a fly out."

Today's Game:

6:10 p.m. vs. St. Louis; Mets scheduled pitchers: RHP Kodai Senga, RHP Reed Garrett, RHP Sean Reid-Foley.

Abbey Mastracco NY Daily News: "Jeff McNeil will miss Opening Day with a right oblique strain, manager Carlos Mendoza told reporters Thursday at Clover Park. The second baseman/outfielder will be shut down for the next 7-10 days and will then have to continue his spring progression, which sets a timeline for a return at 3-4 weeks."

Tim Healey Newsday: Mets' Jeff McNeil strains oblique and will miss three to four weeks. "McNeil will be shut down from baseball activity for seven to 10 days...His temporary absence creates another opening in the infield for Brett Baty, Luisangel Acuna, Donovan Walton or Luis De Los Santos....Acuna said through an interpreter of potentially making the Opening Day squad for the first time: 'Hopefully that’s the case, but I don’t control that. That’s why I have to continue to go out there and work and give my best self on the field. It would be a great honor to be on the Opening Day roster with this team and represent the Mets.'"

NY Post: Sean Manaea begins throwing again in promising Mets injury update. "Carlos Mendoza said Thursday that Manaea began playing catch Tuesday and is symptom-free. But there isn’t a timetable for the left-hander’s return to the rotation in the regular season, since he’ll likely need to go through a full spring training — or more — before he’s set to come back."

Danny Abriano SNY.TV: Mets' wave of rapidly approaching pitching prospects is tantalizing — and a potential 2025 X-factor. "Brandon Sproat and Nolan McLean could make an impact this season, and there's more coming."  Danny also mentions Blade Tidwell, Jonah Tong and Christian Scott who has resumed throwing after Tommy John surgery last year.

Jon Heyman NY Post Sports+: David Stearns may not want any part of Vladimir Guerrero Jr.’s price tag. "Despite the speculation and the Mets’ well-stocked cash drawer, folks don’t believe they’d be the one to pay that. People around the game don’t see Mets honcho David Stearns spending that much money on a slugging first baseman — even a young one." (subscription required)

NY Post Sports+: Juan Soto tells The Post unhinged fan ‘stayed quiet’ after Mets star got revenge in viral moment“After that, he stayed quiet,” Soto said of the fan. “He smiled and looked at me when I went back out there, but nothing else happened. He didn’t say anything else. Not one word. He tried to get my attention to record me and I didn’t say anything. It was fun.” (subscription required)

Tim Britton The Athletic: Mark Vientos aced handling failure. Can he handle success just as well?  Mark talks about his motivation for this year "I want to be one of the best players in the big leagues. I won’t stop until I get to that point.”  Tim also noted "Vientos spent his time with hitting coach Matt Lopes at TBT Training in South Florida prepping his body for that expanded grind that includes October..."(subscription required)

The Mets, who will play their inaugural season next year, lure former Yankee general manager George Weiss out of retirement to become the club's first president. The expansion team is believed to have been offered the iron-fisted executive a five-year deal at $100,000 annually, more than he ever earned during his 14 seasons with the Bronx Bombers.
