PRESS RELEASE - FOUR METS NAMED TO THE NL ALL-STAR TEAM

FLUSHING, N.Y., July 10, 2022 – Major League Baseball tonight announced that first baseman Pete Alonso, second baseman Jeff McNeil, outfielder Starling Marte and RHP Edwin Díaz were named to the 2022 National League All-Star team. The 92nd All-Star Game will take place on Tuesday, July 19 at Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles.

The last time the Mets had four All-Stars was in 2016 (Noah Syndergaard, Yoenis Céspedes, Jeurys Familia and Bartolo Colón).

Alonso, 27, joins Keith Hernandez as the only two Mets first basemen to be named to multiple All-Star teams. Alonso also earned an All-Star nod in 2019 while Hernandez was a three-time All-Star with the Mets.

Entering today, Alonso led the majors with 70 RBI, was second in the NL with 23 homers and seventh with a .886 OPS. He is closing in on the franchise record for first half RBI, a mark held by David Wright (74 RBI in 2006).

McNeil, 30, joins Ron Hunt as the only two Mets second basemen to be named to multiple All-Star teams. McNeil was an All-Star in 2019 while Hunt was an All-Star in 1964 and 1966.

Entering today, McNeil was sixth in the majors and third in the NL with a .315 batting average, seventh in the NL in OBP (.376) and had the third-lowest strikeout rate (7.76 PA/K).

Marte, 33, was named to the All-Star team for the second time in his career. He was also an All-Star in 2016 with Pittsburgh.

Marte was tied for the team lead and tied for 12th in the NL with 50 runs scored, 14th in batting average (.291) and eighth with 26 multi-hit games entering today.

Díaz, 28, was named to the All-Star team for the second time in his career. He was an All-Star in 2018 with Seattle.

Díaz has 66 strikeouts in 33.1 innings entering today, the most among major league relievers. His strikeout per nine rate of 17.82 is the best mark in the majors among pitchers with at least 25.0 innings. Diaz ranks fifth in the majors and fourth in the NL with 18 saves and he has struck out 49.6% of the batters he's faced (66/133). Díaz was the NL Reliever of the Month for June after posting a 0.93 ERA (one earned run/9.2 innings), converting all five of his save opportunities and recording 21 strikeouts.
