Game Recap and Highlights: Hammerheads close strong, beat Mets 7-4

 


Williams goes 2 for 3 with 2B, 2 RBI in return to lineup

 

ST. LUCIE METS PRESS RELEASE: PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. (May 2, 2023) – The St. Lucie Mets return to Clover Park was spoiled by the Jupiter Hammerheads, as the Hammerheads won the series opener 7-4 on Tuesday night (Box Score).

 

The game was tied 3-3 after five innings but the Hammerheads were able to pull away. Harrison Spohn hit a go-ahead RBI single in the sixth off Christopher Vasquez to put Jupiter up 4-3. Jorge Caballero knocked a two-out RBI in the seventh to make it 5-3.

 

Dyon Campos blasted a solo home run, his first of the season, in the bottom of the seventh to bring the Mets within a run. However, the Hammerheads scored two runs with two outs in the top of the ninth on a Caballero RBI single and a wild pitch by Jean Calderon that made it 7-4.

 

Jett Williams smashed a two-out double in the bottom of the ninth to bring up Tim Locastro as the tying run. Locastro, in the second game of a MLB rehab assignment, flew out to deep center to end the game.

 

Williams, who missed the final four games of the previous series in Clearwater after being hit on the elbow, went 2 for 3 with a pair of RBI sac flies, a double and single in his return to the lineup.

 

Mets starter Jordany Ventura pitched his best game of the season. He logged 5.0 innings and scattered seven hits and three runs. Ventura struck out five and walked just one. He induced two double play balls and received a no-decision.

 

Jupiter starter Cole Kirschsieper matched Ventura’s 5.0 innings and three runs. He was credited with his fourth win of the season.

 

Vasquez (0-3) took the loss for the Mets. He gave up four hits and two runs in 1.2 innings.

 

Jacob Reimer hit his first home run of the season, a 433-foot blast off the top of the batter’s eye, that briefly put the Mets ahead 2-1 in the fourth inning.

 

Campos added a triple to his homer.

 

Caballero went 4 for 5 to lead the Hammerheads.

 

The Mets (5-17) and Hammerheads (13-9) play the second game of their series at Clover Park on Wednesday. First pitch is 6:10 p.m.
