BINGHAMTON, N.Y. – The Binghamton Rumble Ponies (30-29) swept the first-place Portland Sea Dogs (36-23) in a doubleheader at Mirabito Stadium on Thursday night. The Ponies’ pitching staff was masterful, as starters Luis Moreno and Christian Scott combined for 19 strikeouts over 12 innings of work.
Game One: Rumble Ponies 7, Sea Dogs 3
Binghamton’s starting pitcher Luis Moreno delivered one of his best outings of the season. Moreno threw six innings and totaled a career-high 10 strikeouts. The 24-year-old allowed just two runs on four hits in the outing.
The Ponies used timely offense to take the lead and extend it. Binghamton scored three runs in the second inning, highlighted by an RBI single from Wyatt Young and RBI groundout from Rowdey Jordan.
Up 3-1 in the third, Joe Suozzi hit an RBI single to make it 4-1 Binghamton. With the Ponies leading 4-2 in the fifth, Suozzi crushed the first home run of his Double-A career to extend the lead to 5-2.
The Ponies added two more runs in the sixth on Brandon McIlwain’s two-run shot off the batter’s eye in center. McIlwain’s homer made Binghamton’s lead 7-2. Trey McLoughlin allowed one run in the seventh but finished the game, as the Ponies won 7-3.
Game Two: Rumble Ponies 3, Sea Dogs 2
Binghamton’s starting pitcher Christian Scott made his Double-A debut on his 24th birthday on Thursday night. Scott twirled a career-high six innings and tied his career-high with nine strikeouts. Scott allowed just two base runners and one run in the entire start.
Matt O’Neill tied the game at 1-1 with a solo home run in the second inning. Matt Rudick led off the third inning with a single and Jordan followed with a two-run blast to right field to give Binghamton a 3-1 lead.
Scott retired 14 of the final 15 batters that he faced after allowing a solo homer to Niko Kavadas in the second inning. Matt Minnick made his Binghamton debut on the mound in the seventh and worked around a solo homer from Marcelo Mayer by recording two strikeouts.
The Rumble Ponies continue their series with the Sea Dogs on Friday at Mirabito Stadium. First pitch is set for 7:05 PM and pregame coverage will get underway at 6:50 PM on Newsradio 1290 WNBF and 92.1 FM. New York Mets legend Darryl Strawberry will be making a guest appearance, as the Rumble Ponies commemorate the 41st anniversary of the Owego Strawberry Festival and play as the Southern Tier Shortcakes.
Postgame Notes: Moreno has a combined 17 strikeouts in his past two starts…Scott has struck out nine batters in each of his last two starts, with his previous start coming for High-A Brooklyn…Four different Binghamton hitters cracked home runs across the doubleheader…Binghamton has now swept three of its five doubleheaders this season and split the other two.
