BOX SCORE

WAPPINGERS FALLS, N.Y. (July 23, 2023) — Trailing 4-0 entering the fourth inning, Brooklyn received a trio of home runs — including a go-ahead two-run blast from RF Stanley Consuegra in the seventh — as the Cyclones rallied to best the Hudson Valley Renegades, 7-4, on Sunday afternoon at Heritage Financial Park.

Down by four entering the fourth, the Cyclones (45-44, 17-7) managed to load the bases thanks to a triumvirate of walks. DH Omar De Los Santos then slashed a line drive that hooked around the pole in left for a grand slam. The 23-year-old’s fifth home run of the season knotted the score at four apiece.

It remained tied until Brooklyn utilized the gopher ball again in the seventh. LF Rhylan Thomas started the frame with a single to left, but after scooting to second on a wild pitch, remained there with two out.

With Consuegra at the plate, the 22-year-old pounded the sixth pitch he saw beyond the left-center field fence for a go-ahead two-run home run. Consuegra’s third homer of the series — and team-high-tying 10th of the year — provided the ‘Clones with their first lead, 6-4.

Five pitches later, it was 1B Mateo Gil’s turn. After being robbed of a two-run blast by RF Aldenis Sánchez in the fifth, the Texas resident popped a towering drive that landed by the trees past the left-field wall. Gil’s ninth home run of the year — and fourth against Hudson Valley (11-13, 50-40) — extended Brooklyn’s lead to three, 7-4.

The Renegades were able to bring the tying run to the plate in the ninth, but could not push across a run.

RHP Paul Gervase surrendered an infield single and a walk but recorded all three outs in the final frame via strikeouts. The Fuquay-Varina, N.C. native secured a series victory for the Cyclones and his sixth save of the campaign.

Much like Brooklyn, Hudson Valley played long ball to jump out to an early 4-0 advantage.

2B Ben Cowles led off the home first with a solo shot to left and added another with one out in the third. His eighth and ninth homers of the season put the Renegades ahead 2-0.

After Cowles’ second jack in the third, SS Alexander Vargas singled and — on the next pitch — C Agustin Ramírez whacked a two-run home run to left-center. The 21-year-old’s second blast of the series — and fourth in the South Atlantic League — put Hudson Valley in front, 4-0.

Neither starter received a decision on Sunday. RHP Cameron Foster permitted four runs on six hits over 2.2 innings in an abbreviated start for Brooklyn, while Hudson Valley’s RHP Juan Carela struck out seven, but yielded four runs of his own over four frames.

RHP Jace Beck (4-4) posted a scoreless inning of relief in the sixth, ultimately earning his fourth win of the year.

RHP Shane Gray (0-1) was charged with all three of the Cyclones’ runs in the seventh and was charged with his first loss in the SAL.

Following Monday’s league-wide off day, Brooklyn will return home to open a six-game series against the Wilmington Blue Rocks, the High-A affiliate of the Washington Nationals, on Tuesday night. Neither side has announced a probable starter for the lid-lifter. The first pitch is scheduled for 7 p.m.
