Tim Healey Newsday: Mets' Pete Alonso is on a quest to hit 500 home runs (at least). "In the bigger picture of his career, he said, one of his major personal goals is to hit 500 home runs...A healthy upcoming season very likely would feature him breaking the Mets’ all-time mark, of 252...to pass the halfway point in just his seventh season...Then the hard part will start: being productive through at least most of his 30s."
Joel Sherman NY Post Sports+: Mets stars’ coveted sixth skill can give them a season-long advantage. "...the Mets’ three most expensive players for 2025 earn their pay by punching the clock. Over the past three seasons, the Mets have the players who rank third (Alonso, 476), fifth (Lindor, 473) and sixth (Soto, 472) in games played. The fourth-most expensive Met this year is Brandon Nimmo, whose 454 games is 22nd from 2022-24." (subscription required)
Abbey Mastracco NY Daily News: Mets Notebook: Edwin Diaz feeling healthy, David Peterson throws 5 shutout innings. “I feel great, man, I feel great. I feel like I’m ready to go already,” Edwin Diaz said. “I think throwing today and tomorrow, back-to-back, that’s my last thing to do in the spring. So I’m doing really good. I’ve been able to work in the backfield on a couple of things, and that helped me last week. The last couple of times I threw it was really good, I was happy about everything.”
Anthony DiComo Mets.com: Díaz's velo is down from his peak. Does it matter? "According to the stadium radar gun on Wednesday in the Mets’ 8-2 win over the Astros, Diaz’s four-seam fastball sat 93-95 mph, similar to where it was in his previous Grapefruit League outing last Thursday against the Red Sox...It’s entirely possible that the days of Díaz sitting 99 mph with his fastball, as he did in the Timmy Trumpet dream season of 2022, are gone forever...command tends to matter far more than velocity. Ninety-seven may not be 101, but for a pitcher like Díaz, it should still be plenty.
Mike Puma NY Post: Christian Scott undaunted by crowded Mets pitching scene that awaits him. "Six months into his rehab from Tommy John surgery, the right-hander started throwing every other day beginning last week. His season will consist of further rehab, both at the spring training complex and in New York, with the hope of cracking the 2026 rotation as his focus. It could be a crowded scene....Brandon Sproat, Blade Tidwell, Nolan McLean and Jonah Tong. Such a proposition excites the 25-year-old Scott, knowing he will have to earn his place."
Mike Puma NY Post Sports+: Edgardo Alfonzo tells The Post why he’s loving new role in Mets return. "Alfonzo, 51, has spent much of Mets spring training in minor league camp as an advisor. It’s a role that will carry into the season, with Alfonzo visiting the various affiliates to help with the players. 'It is something I have a passion for, talking to the kids, and [the Mets] want me to do that,' Alfonzo, a member of the Mets Hall of Fame, told The Post." (subscription required)
NY Post: Eric Chavez raves about all ways Juan Soto is quietly helping Mets. Chavez is quoted - "You might not be able to do what he can, but Soto can definitely help good hitters like Francisco Alvarez and Jesse Winker be the best version of themselves. You just have to pay attention.”
NY Post Sports+: The Mets can’t worry about the regular-season Dodgers because only one series really matters. "But all the Mets have to do is figure out the formula for beating the Dodgers four times in seven games when the calendar flips to October...The Mets don’t need to figure out the Dodgers when the pair of teams meet three times in May and three times in June. That, as they found out last year, isn’t necessarily an accurate gauge for how the teams would match up in a postseason series." (subscription required)
