Syracuse, NY – The Syracuse Mets rolled to victory on Tuesday night behind hot hitting from the one-man wrecking crew that was Brett Baty. The 23-year-old from Texas drove in five runs as the Mets took down the Columbus Clippers (Triple-A affiliate Cleveland Guardians), 6-4, at NBT Bank Stadium. It’s the first and only series between Syracuse and Columbus during this 2023 season. The Clippers have not visited the Salt City since the 2019 season.

Early on, it was Columbus (51-62, 18-21) who got on the board first via a powerful swing from one of their young sluggers. Leading off the top of the second, Johnathan Rodriguez lifted a ball over the left-field fence to jolt the Clippers to an early 1-0 lead. The 23-year-old now has seven home runs in 16 games with Columbus since being called up at the end of July.

From there, however, the Clippers didn’t do much of anything against Syracuse’s (47-66, 14-25) starting pitcher. David Griffin surrendered just one more run in his start, an RBI groundout to Bryan Lavastida in the fifth inning. Other than that, Griffin was excellent. He finished his five-inning start with just four hits and two runs allowed while walking two and striking out four. Griffin, in his last two starts, has some pretty stellar numbers. He has allowed just three earned runs in ten innings pitched, surrendering seven hits while striking out nine batters.

While Griffin was holding steady on the mound, Syracuse’s offense backed Griffin up. In the bottom of the third, the Mets loaded up the bases with two outs. That set the stage for Baty, who delivered in the best way possible. After fouling off a pair of pitches to stay alive, the left-handed slugger took a hanging breaking ball and crushed it over the wall in left-center field for a grand slam that put the Mets in front for good. It was the third home run for Baty in five games since returning to Triple-A last week.

Baty wasn’t done there as he produced yet another run in the top of the sixth. First, leading off the inning, Ronny Mauricio singled on the tenth pitch of his at-bat to put a runner on first. Baty did the rest, smoking a double into the gap in left-center field to score Mauricio all the way from first and make it a 5-3 game. Columbus had scored a run in the top of the sixth to briefly slim the deficit to just a run at 4-3. Baty has now played 14 games in Triple-A this season and he has three different five-RBI games while playing in Triple-A with Syracuse.

The Mets added to the lead later in the frame when Tomas Nido slapped a two-out single into center field that scored Baty and made it a 6-3 game. Nido has been productive since assuming a nearly everyday role with Syracuse in the middle of June, batting .293 in 29 games with 11 runs driven in. Nido also has hits in seven out of his last nine games.

The Syracuse bullpen made sure the lead would hold up. Vinny Nittoli, Adam Kolerak, Edwin Uceta, and Nate Lavender combined to allow just two runs (one earned) on two hits in the final four innings to seal the victory. Lavender earned the save by recording the final two outs in the top of the ninth. The left-hander from Illinois now owns a 2.87 ERA in 24 Triple-A appearances with 46 strikeouts in just more than 31 innings of work.

Syracuse continues its six-game series against the Triple-A affiliate of the Cleveland Guardians on Wednesday night. The second game of the series is slated for a 6:35 p.m. start time with José Chacin slated to start on the mound for the Mets against right-hander right-hander Joey Cantillo for the Clippers.
