Brooklyn Cyclones Press Release By Johnny Gadamowitz (reprinted from milb.com/brooklyn by permission)
BROOKLYN, N.Y. (August 15, 2023) - The Brooklyn Cyclones fell to the Hudson Valley Renegades on Tuesday night at Maimonides Park, 4-2. Brooklyn brought the tying run to the plate in the bottom of the ninth, but ultimately dropped the series opener.
The Brooklyn bullpen continued its stride on Tuesday. The combination of RHP Joshua Cornielly and RHP Dylan Hall combined for 3.2 innings of two-hit, scoreless ball. Hudson Valley managed all of its scoring off RHP Robert Colina, who surrendered four runs, including two home runs, over 5.1 innings.
Hudson Valley opened up the scoring on the night, when 3B Ben Cowles clubbed his 10th long ball of the season - a solo home run that just cleared the right field wall.
The Renegades continued to tag Colina with the long ball. In the top of the sixth, LF Jesus Rodriguez launched a two-run shot to left center, extending Hudson Valley’s lead to 3-0. That home run marked the first time this season that Colina has given up multiple home runs in a singular outing.
Later in the frame, Cowles continued his productive offensive night. The former Maryland Terrapin logged a base knock to left field, scoring C Antonio Gomez to push the Renegade lead to 4-0.
Brooklyn would not go down without a fight, though. With a man on and one out in the bottom of the ninth, LF Rhylan Thomas swatted his second Brooklyn home run to cut the deficit in half.
Brooklyn brought the tying run to the plate in the form of 1B Ryan Clifford with CF Alex RamÃrez on base, but Clifford was called out on strikes to end the ballgame.
The Cyclones return to action Wednesday night at Maimonides Park against the Renegades. First pitch is set for 7:00 p.m. RHP Jordany Ventura (3-0, 2.73) is the expected probable for Brooklyn. He’ll oppose RHP Justin Lange (0-0, 0.00 ERA).
