BOX SCORE

BROOKLYN, N.Y (August 12, 2023) - Despite multi-hit games from 1B Ryan Clifford and LF Rhylan Thomas, the Brooklyn Cyclones fell to the Aberdeen Ironbirds, 8-3, on Saturday evening at Maimonides Park. The ‘Clones had trouble getting the big hit, going just 1-for-12 with men in scoring position on the night.

It was a bullpen day for Brooklyn, as RHP Cameron Foster was a late scratch due to back tightness. RHP Jace Beck took his place in a spot start, and three runs over two frames. RHP Benito Garcia was efficient, hurling five innings while allowing just one hit and one unearned run.

Aberdeen started the contest with a bang, when C Samuel Basallo clubbed a three-run home run in the first - all before Brooklyn recorded an out. The long ball marked Basallo’s first High-A homer of the season, and 13th overall of the campaign.

Aberdeen ballooned its lead a few frames later in the third. After RHP Luis Montas took the place of Beck, Montas put men on second and third with no one out. From there, a balk was called against Montas, allowing CF Elio Prado to score.

That was the first of two runs via balks for Aberdeen in the frame. Moments later, Montas balked again with Basallo on third. This time around, it pushed the Aberdeen lead to 5-0.

Brooklyn countered with two in the bottom of the third, when Clifford rocketed a two run double into the right center field gap - one of two doubles he would hit during the contest.

Aberdeen got one back in the fourth on a fielding error by RF Stanley Consuegra. Consuegra dropped a fly ball in right, allowing RF Kevin Guerrero to score and make it 6-2.

Brooklyn got the run back in the fifth, though, on an RBI groundout from 3B Jacob Reimer, shaving the deficit to 6-3.

From there, no runs came home on either side until the ninth. With the bases loaded and no one out, Aberdeen plated one when 3B Frederick Bencosme grounded into a force out. The Ironbirds’ second run of the frame came courtesy of a bases-loaded walk drawn by Basallo, giving him 4 RBI on the evening.

Brooklyn loaded the bases with one out in the ninth, but failed to score when Consuegra grounded into a game-ending double play.

The Cyclones and Ironbirds finish up their regular season series Sunday afternoon in Brooklyn. RHP Robert Colina (3-2, 2.89) toes the slab as Brooklyn aims for the series victory. RHP Daniel Lloyd (4-5, 3.46) will try to toss Aberdeen to a series split. First pitch from Maimonides Park is set for 2:00 p.m.
