Syracuse, NY – The Syracuse Mets wrapped up an overall impressive week in frustrating fashion, dropping a 9-1 decision to the Rochester Red Wings on Sunday afternoon. Despite the loss, it was still a good week for the Mets. Syracuse took three out of the five games played against Rochester, two of which came on walk-off hits.
Rochester (62-72, 28-33) took the early lead on Sunday afternoon, scoring once in the second and twice in the fourth to take a 3-0 lead after the first four innings. In the second inning, a two-out RBI triple from Jeter Downs plated Frankie Tostado, who had doubled earlier in the frame. In the fourth, Brady Lindsly doubled with the bases loaded to score Jake Noll and Erick Mejia, boosting the lead for the Red Wings up to 3-0.
All those earned runs were charged to Justin Jarvis, who surrendered the three earned runs on five hits in four innings of work with two walks and four strikeouts. The final line for Jarvis was maddeningly familiar. The right-handed starter has now made seven starts with Syracuse since being acquired in a trade with the Milwaukee Brewers organization at the end of July. Jarvis has allowed at least three earned runs in five of those eight starts. Jarvis has also struck out at least three batters in each of his starts with Syracuse. Jarvis has not exceeded four and one-third innings in any of his starts yet since joining the Mets organization.
Rochester tacked on another run once Jarvis left the game in the fifth, increasing the lead up to 4-0. Derek Hill singled to lead off the inning, stole his way to second, advanced up to third on a groundout and scored on a sacrifice fly from Noll.
The Red Wings added to the lead yet again with two runs in the sixth, highlighted by an RBI single from Darren Baker. Baker had a tremendous week at the plate, smacking at least two hits in each of the five games played.
While the offense for Rochester provided plenty of early punch, their starting pitcher was rendering the Syracuse (55-79, 22-38) lineup nearly completely silent. Alemao Hernandez was brilliant in six innings of work, allowing just one run with two walks and seven strikeouts. In fact, the only hit Hernandez surrendered was on a solo home run from Lorenzo Cedrola to lead off the bottom of the sixth making it a 6-1 ballgame. Six of Hernandez's seven strikeouts were swinging strikeouts, as he utilized a slew of steady breaking balls to keep the Mets batters completely off balance.
The Red Wings wrapped up their scoring in the top of the ninth, officially putting the game out of reach with three runs on four hits to make it a 9-1 game. The frame was capped off by yet another hit from Baker, this one a two-run double that finished off the scoring on the afternoon for Rochester. Baker finished the week 13-for-24 at the plate with six runs driven in, four stolen bases, and two runs scored.
While the Rochester offense rightfully grabbed most of the headlines as they rapped out 15 hits and scored nine runs, the Red Wings' pitching staff also deserves plenty of love. After Hernandez ceded the scene, Tommy Romero tossed scoreless seventh and eighth innings followed by a scoreless ninth from Hobie Harris to seal the 9-1 victory. Syracuse finished the game with just three hits and six total baserunners.
Syracuse now hits the road for its final trip away from home during the 2023 season. The Mets will be in Worcester, Massachusetts all next week, taking on the Triple-A affiliate of the Boston Red Sox, the Worcester Red Sox. The first game of the series is slated for a 6:45 p.m. start on Tuesday with right-hander Denyi Reyes scheduled to take the mound for the Mets.
