"Luis will be a valuable addition to our staff and a quality member of the rotation," Mets President of Baseball Operations David Stearns said. "As a two-time All-Star, he has shown he has what it takes to pitch in New York in big moments and we look forward to having him on the mound in Queens."

The eight-year major league veteran has twice been named an American League All-Star (2017 and 2018). He was an AL Cy Young finalist in 2017, finishing third in the vote after going 14-6 in 31 starts with a 2.98 ERA (64 ER/193.1 IP), a career-best 230 strikeouts and a 1.04 WHIP, holding opponents to a .204 average. Severino underwent Tommy John surgery in February of 2020, missed the 2020 season and returned in September 2021, making four scoreless relief appearances with eight strikeouts in 6.0 IP.
