Press Release: Mets Hall Of Famer Buddy Harrelson has passed "Last night, Mets Hall of Famer Buddy Harrelson passed away at age 79 at a hospice house in East Northport, Long Island after a lengthy battle with Alzheimer's. Harrelson played for the Mets from 1965-1977. He was a member of the 1969 Miracle Mets, a two-time All-Star (1970 and 1971) and earned the 1971 Gold Glove at shortstop. He later would serve as a coach with the Mets in 1982 and again from 1985-1990. Harrelson took over the managerial duties early in the 1990 season and led the Mets through the 1991 campaign."
Press Release: Tributes to Buddy Harrelson "JERRY KOOSMAN: 'He the best shortstop who played behind me – period. I can't tell you how many runs he saved.'... CLEON JONES: 'Buddy and I played together in the minor leagues in Buffalo. He worked so hard to become the shortstop that he became. He listened to the coaches and did everything he could to get better.'...KEVIN MITCHELL: 'I don't score the tying run in Game Six without Buddy's advice. He gave me a tip to be aware that Bob Stanley throws a lot of balls in the dirt. What a nice man he was.'"
"He had a fantastic life. He was a wonderful man. He was a great ballplayer and he was my personal hero."

A better ambassador. There was no fan to whom he would refuse an autograph, a handshake or a conversation, no charity to which he would refuse a request for help, or an appearance, and no one who was any prouder to be a New York Met during and after his playing days. (More)

Commitment to him and their family throughout these trying last number of years. I mourn for them, for his teammates, his legion of fans, and frankly for anyone who ever came in contact with him. To all of us, Bud Harrelson was a dear friend. RIP number 3.

When I worked with the @LIDucks in 2016, Buddy would come in about once a week and answer fan mail, send back autograph requests -- without fail.

He didn't have to do it, he didn't need to do it. But he did it because he loved it.
RIP to a total class act 😢 https://t.co/XoKbIFLan8
