NY Post: 1986 Mets World Series Champion Lenny Dykstra suffers stroke. "Mets great Lenny Dykstra suffered a stroke and has been hospitalized in Los Angeles, a source confirmed to The Post. News of Dykstra’s health issues first popped up on social media after “Dolan’s Bar,” a Ridley Park, Pennsylvania business, posted on X that Dykstra had a “mini-stroke” and that the ex-MLBer’s family was around him."
NY Post: New Met Luis Severino believes he’s figured out pitch-tipping issue after deep dive. "Severino said he believes the main issue has happened when he’s throwing a breaking ball with runners on base...Severino, a two-time All-Star who finished third in the American League Cy Young Award voting in 2017, struggled in 2023 with a 6.65 ERA in 89 1/3 innings...He was particularly vulnerable with runners in scoring position, as hitters had a .330/.404/.637 slash line with seven homers in just 105 plate appearances."
NY Post: Mets hopeful Zack Short once got boost from Bobby Valentine. Zack Short went to Sacred Heart University where Bobby Valentine served as the athletic director. "The 28-year-old Short, a Kingston native, grew up with both New York teams in his bloodlines — his mother rooted for the Yankees and his dad for the Mets...He will begin camp behind veteran Joey Wendle on the depth chart as a backup who can play multiple infield positions."
NY Post: Mets’ David Peterson progressing well after hip surgery.
Jon Heyman NY Post: Mets new-found rotation depth could become surprising strength. "Behind the front five, the Mets have a quartet of young pitchers with big-league experience — Tylor Megill, Joey Lucchesi, Jose Butto and David Peterson, who should be back around June after offseason hip surgery. All four have minor league options, providing more flexibility. Plus, there’s also at least three well-regarded prospects who could easily make it up — Dominic Hamel, Mike Vasil and Christian Scott."
CBS Sports:
- Three reasons why Mets should extend Pete Alonso this spring, and three reasons to let slugger hit free agency "Three reasons to extend Alonso - 1. Good luck replacing his production. 2. He's the face of the franchise. 3. The price could go up. Three reasons not to extend Alonso - 1. It's an unforgiving profile. 2. The market could bring his price down. 3. The Mets could get a lot in a trade."

Donald M. Grant, chairman and a
minority owner of the Mets, offers Branch Rickey a contract to become the
general manager of the new National League expansion team. After the former

"Baseball
is known as our national pastime, but the game has deep roots and a rich
history here in New York State. From the National Baseball Hall of Fame and
Museum in storied Cooperstown to the Mets and Yankees — the pinnacles of
Major League Baseball, to our recently crowned Little League World Series
champions from Maine-Endwell, New York State is clearly the epicenter of
baseball greatness. It is time that we formally recognize baseball as our
official state sport." - JAMES SEWARD, New York state
senator. New
York State Sen. James Seward (R-Milford), thanks to a suggestion from a group
of fourth-graders at Cooperstown Elementary School, announces he has
introduced legislation (S.4288) to designate baseball
as New York’s official state sport. In a press release, Hall of Fame
president Jeff Idelson says he "enthusiastically supports” the proposed
bill, citing Cooperstown serves as the spiritual home of baseball. |
2011 - The Mets bring back a figure from the past, signing reliever Jason Isringhausen to a minor league deal coupled with an invitation to spring training. Isringhausen is attempting a comeback from Tommy John surgery at age 38. He was part of the Mets' vaunted "Big Three" in the mid-1990s along with Bill Pulsipher and Paul Wilson: the minor league standouts were supposed to anchor the Mets' pitching staff for the next decade, but all three fell victim to arm injuries, and none of them had much success in the Big Apple.
