Report: Mets to sign Shintaro Fujinami to one year deal "According to Jon Heyman on Twitter, the New York Mets have signed Shintaro Fujinami to a one year, $3.35M contract with $850K in incentives. Shintaro, 29 - turning 30 in April, is a hard thrower who averages 98 MPH with his fastball and has reached over 100 MPH."

Baseball America: 2024 MLB Farm System Talent Rankings. Mets come in at #8 - down from #5 last year.  About which they say "While the 2023 MLB season was a disaster, the silver lining is that the Mets’ farm system got a boost from trade deadline deals, which yielded five of the organization’s top 20 prospects. Keep an eye on SS/OF Jett Williams. His ability to play up the middle and get on base could make him a productive addition to the lineup." (Subscription required)

ESPN.com also ranked the MLB Farm Systems.  They have the Mets at #11. "The decision to trade away Justin Verlander, Max Scherzer and David Robertson before the deadline paid off for the future, though, returning three Top 100 prospects and another who could join the list in Marco Vargas. Those acquisitions came at a time when this system was already on the upswing because it has brought in talent both domestically and internationally while focusing on adding players, rather than trading them away to contend." Baseball America: 39 Players Who Narrowly Missed Our 2024 MLB Top 30 Prospects Lists. Mets players included Joel Diaz - "...Tommy John surgery in late March that will keep him out until at least May 2024...When healthy in 2021 and 2022, Diaz showed a swing-and-miss fastball, improving velocity and an athletic 6-foot-2 frame that could support augmented strength. He throws strikes with a 93-mph fastball that has peaked at 97 and comes from a low release height with riding life." and Saul Garcia, RHP "Garcia is one of the hardest pitchers to hit in the Mets system, but without improved velocity or control, he looks like a prime relief candidate. He is ready for a longer look at High-A Brooklyn." (Subscription required)

Press Release: Cyclones Announce 2024 Coaching Staff Led by Manager Gilbert Gomez "In conjunction with the New York Mets, the Brooklyn Cyclones announced their 2024 coaching staff on Tuesday. Gilbert Gómez, who most recently won the 2024 Dominican Winter League championship as manager of Los Tigres del Licey, will be the 15th manager in franchise history when the season opens on Friday, April 5th."

The Mets tell a surprised Tim McCarver that he will not be returning to the team's broadcast booth. The franchise's pitching legend Tom Seaver, who was in the television booth for the Yankees from 1989 to 1993, will replace the highly regarded, but outspoken 57 year-old broadcaster, who spent 16 years with the team doing local telecasts.

2002

Yankee catcher Jorge Posada (.277, 22, 95) signs a five-year, $51 million contract with a club option for a sixth season. The 30 year-old Bronx Bomber backstop, with an average annual value of more than $10 million, is the second-highest among major league catchers, trailing only the receiver Mike Piazza, who signed a seven-year, $91 million deal with the Mets in 1998 that averages $13 million annually.

2009

Oliver Perez agrees to a $36 million, three-year deal to stay with the Mets. The 29 year-old inconsistent southpaw, who has posted a 26-20 record with New York since being obtained from Pittsburgh during the 2006 season, will be part of the team's starting rotation.

2011

A lawsuit brought by the victims of Bernie Madoff name Fred Wilpon and Saul Katz, contending the Mets owners' enriched themselves with many years of profitable investing in the Ponzi Scheme while ignoring many warnings that the payoffs might have been fraudulent. Speculation concerning the sale of the team, to meet the financial obligations caused by a possible $1 billion settlement, has started circulating in the sports and banking industries.

2010Nelson Figueroa strikes out 8 in a complete game 7 - 1 victory, leading Escogido over Hermosillo on the second day of the 2010 Caribbean Series. A solo home run by Carlos Valencia is the only blemish on Figueroa's record, while his teammate with the Mets last season, Fernando Martinez, hits a two-run homer for the winners.
