Mason Maier, now in remission from leukemia, will be honored as a 'Met for a Day', participating in warmups and watching batting practice with the team
New York Mets will host a dream experience for 7-year-old Mason Maier, recently treated for Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (ALS) at Northwell Health's Cohen Children's Medical Center, on Monday, March 11, 2PM, at Clover Park. Mason will be honored as a 'Met for a Day', where he'll get fitted for a full uniform before being introduced to Mets players and coaches. Mason will participate in warmups, stretching and throwing with the team, before watching players take batting practice from the batting cage. Mason's parents and siblings will join him for the experience, participating in a tour of the Spring Training Complex as well as meet and greets with players and coaches.
In mid-June 2019, Mason Maier started having fevers for prolonged periods of time. He would be lethargic, barely eating, and had bruises on the skin. Mason's parents would bring him to their primary physician and was told it is a virus that is taking longer to get out of his system.
In August, his mom, Laura Maier, just knew something wasn't right and spoke to a hospital employee who instructed Laura to bring Mason directly to the Emergency Department of Cohen Children's Hospital, which is the fastest way to find out what is wrong.
Quickly after, Mason was admitted and diagnosed for Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia. Mason went under approximately three years of chemotherapy treatments. He has had multiple long hospital stays from infections or low white cell count, and chemo treatments.
Today, Mason has been for several months in remission!
