Cardinals 4 Mets 2 Post Game Notes 4/26/2024:

Mets
  • Are 6-2 over their last eight home games.
  • Have 14 double-digit strikeout games this season, tied with Cleveland and Milwaukee for the most such games this season.
  • Mets relievers fired 3.1 scoreless innings to lower the team's bullpen ERA to 2.85 ERA (31 ER/91.0 IP)...Is the second-lowest mark in the NL and seventh-lowest mark in the majors.

Mark W. Sanchez NY Post: J.D. Martinez’s stellar debut can’t keep Mets from falling to Cardinals. "The Mets (13-12) dropped the first game of a seven-game homestand mostly because Jose Butto missed with location a few times and the Mets’ offense continually missed in important moments...Butto was up and down — actually, first down then up — while allowing four runs on four hits and three walks in 5 ²/₃ innings."

Laura Albanese Newsday: Mets' J.D. Martinez contributes in debut, but club still falls to Cardinals. "The Cardinals broke through in the second when Butto hit Nolan Arenado and walked Paul Goldschmidt to bring up Alec Burleson, who put a charge on an 85-mph changeup left over the plate, blasting it 412 feet to the Shea Bridge in right for a 3-0 lead. St. Louis added one more in the third when Willson Contreras got a hanging sinker and didn’t miss it, hitting a 445-foot no-doubter to left for a 4-0 advantage."

Brian Joura Mets360: "St. Louis came in as one of the worst HR-hitting teams in the majors but jumped out to a 4-0 lead thanks to two blasts, including a three-run homer in the second inning."

NY Post: ‘Grateful’ Tomas Nido crushes homer in long-awaited return to Queens. "Nido, playing in his first game at Citi Field since June 3, welcomed himself back with a home run and double in the Mets’ 4-2 loss to the Cardinals."

NY Post: J.D. Martinez has two-hit night in his Mets’ debut: ‘be competitive’. "He singled in his first at-bat and then smoked an RBI double in the sixth, both to the opposite field, in the Mets’ 4-2 loss to the Cardinals at Citi Field. But Martinez whiffed to lead off the bottom of the ninth."

2004

At Dodger Stadium, Mike Piazza ties Carlton Fisk for the most career homers by a catcher as he hits Hideo Nomo's sixth-inning pitch into the stands for his 351st round-tripper as a backstop. The homer, which was his 362nd overall, moves the Mets' star past Yankees' Hall of Famer Joe DiMaggio on the all-time list.

2010

David Wright, with an RBI single to right field off Ramon Troncoso in the fifth inning of New York's 10-5 victory over L.A. at Citi Field, becomes the eighth and quickest player to accumulate 1,000 hits in a Mets uniform. The 27 year-old third baseman, who surpasses Mike Piazza's mark of 935 games to reach the milestone, accomplishes the feat in his 868th career contest with the club.

2010

The suddenly streaking Mets win their sixth consecutive game with a doubleheader sweep of the Dodgers, 4-0 and 10-5. The victories mark the first time since August 28, 1971 that the club has taken both ends of a twin bill from L.A.

2012

Mets left fielder Scott Hairston became the tenth player in franchise history to hit for the cycle with his sixth inning double, plating Rueben Tejada and David Wright. The outfielder's four hits, which drive in four runs, aren't enough when Colorado routs New York, scoring 11 times in the fifth, in the Coors Field's contest, 18-9.

2010: The Mets sweep the Dodgers in a doubleheader, 4 - 0 and 10 - 5, to extend their winning streak to 6 games and to record their 8th win in their last 9 games. Jason Bay hits his first home run as a Met in support of Johan Santana's pitching in the opener, while David Wright drives in four runs in the nitecap.

2012 The Rockies reverse a 6 - 2 deficit with an 11-run 5th-inning outburst against the Mets, then pull out with an 18 - 9 win at Coors FieldEric Young starts the ball rolling by beating P Chris Schwinden's throw on a comebacker to the mound; 3 walks, 7 hits, 4 errors and a hit batsman later, the Rockies are cruising to an easy win; Carlos Gonzalez drives in 5 runs during the frame, then Ramon Hernandez adds a grand slam in the 7th. For the Mets, Scott Hairston hits for the cycle in a losing cause, while the two teams combine for 36 hits in the slugfest.
