From the Mets 7 Nationals 0 Post Game Notes - 7/11/2024:

  • Mets:
    • Earned their seventh series sweep of the season and second against Washington (Also: 6/3-6/5).
    • Recorded their first shutout of the season...Did not record a shutout in their first 91 games of the season...Was the longest such streak by a team to begin the season since 2007 when the Tampa Bay Devil Rays allowed at least one run in each of their first 115 games to begin the season.
    • Are 11-2 in their last 13 games at Citi FIeld...Have outscored opponents 58-32 during that span.
    • Are two games over .500 for the first time since they were 13-11 on April 24.
  • David Peterson:
    • Threw 6.0 scoreless innings...Was his fifth career start of at least 6.0 scoreless innings (Last: 9/28/23 vs. Miami)...Has allowed two or fewer earned runs in seven of his first eight starts.
  • Brandon Nimmo:
    • Put the Mets on the board with a bases-clearing double in the fifth...Has 62 RBI, the fourth-most among major league outfielders and tied for the fifth-most in the National League...Is batting .348/.434/.717 June 14...His 30 RBI during that span leads the majors while his 16 extra-base hits are tied for the third-most in the majors during that time frame.
  • J.D. Martinez:
    • Hit an RBI single in the fifth...Also doubled in the fourth for the Mets first hit of the game...Was his first multi-hit game since June 22...Was the fourth time this season reaching base four or more times in a game (Last: 6/16 vs. San Diego).
  • Phil Maton (1.0 IP, 2 K): Threw 1.0 scoreless inning in his Mets debut...Has allowed one run over his last 12.1 innings.

Brian Joura Mets360: "Mets pitchers allowed six hits and five walks, plus they hit three batters. But with the Nats going 1-12 with RISP – and that hit not driving in a run – the Mets picked up their first shutout of the year with a 7-0 whitewashing of Washington Thursday afternoon. The win gave the Mets a sweep of the Nationals and upped their record to 23-10 in their last 33 games."

NY Post: David Peterson continues to help keep Mets rotation afloat with another strong start.  "With runners on the corners before an out was recorded in the second inning, David Peterson was in need of a strikeout. Or three. The lefty starter fanned the next three batters to thwart the biggest threat he faced amid his latest strong outing for the Mets, as Peterson tossed six shutout innings in a 7-0 win Thursday over the Nationals at Citi Field."

NY Post: Brandon Nimmo continues incredible hot streak after All-Star Game snub. "Nimmo, who missed one game on July 1 due to a fainting spell, has posted a torrid slash line of .348/.434/,717 with 30 RBIs since June 14."

NY Post: Mets’ Adam Ottavino showed ‘conviction’ in escaping bases-loaded jam. "Mendoza and Ottavino both chose to accentuate the three strikeouts the righty managed to escape the scoreless frame."

A half-hour after the Midsummer Classic is completed, the Mets send former All-Star reliever Francisco Rodriguez and cash to the Brewers for two players to be named later. K-Rod, an outstanding closer for the Mets and Angels, will be used primarily as a set-up man for Milwaukee's John Axford.

Baseball Reference:

1977Steve Henderson hits a game-winning home run off Bruce Sutter to give the Mets a 4 - 2 victory over the Cubs. After the game the Cubs relief ace admits his arm is bothering him, and asks to be excused from the All-Star Game. Bleeding will be found in Sutter's arm and he will get the week off after the All-Star break to rest it.
