The doubleheader split marks the third time this season the Cyclones have split a twinbill. Overall, Brooklyn is 1-1-3 in doubleheaders this season, good for an even 5-5 through 10 individual games. The win also snapped Hudson Valley’s seven game winning streak, as Brooklyn pitchers stranded 14 Renegades on the bases.
The Cyclones took Game One of Wednesday's doubleheader by the score of 3-2 over the Hudson Valley Renegades at Maimonides Park. Reimer, making his 2024 Coney Island debut after missing the start of the season with an injury, was the hero as his two-out, two-RBI single in the final frame gave the Cyclones a 3-2 win.
The Cyclones jumped out to an early lead on Wednesday evening, taking a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first. Reimer worked a one-out walk before C Chris Suero was hit by a pitch to put a runner in scoring position for 1B Junior Tilien. The 21-year-old responded with a line drive single up the middle on the first pitch he saw to score Reimer with the game's first run.
RHP Jack Wenninger made the start for the Cyclones and worked in and out of trouble over his first 3.0 innings, but in the fourth the Renegades broke through to tie the game. The right hander issued three walks to load the bases with two outs and CF Jace Avina took advantage of the scoring chance with an RBI single to knot the game at 1-1. LHP Ryan Ammons came on in relief and got the final out of the frame to end the threat and leave the bases loaded.
After trading zeroes in the fifth, Hudson Valley took the lead in the top of the sixth. RHP Jordany Ventura issued a one-out walk to 2B Roc Riggio, who advanced to second on a wild pitch and it was Avina again who had a two-out RBI single to give the 'Gades a 2-1 lead.
But in the bottom of the seventh, the final turn at bat in Minor League Doubleheaders, Brooklyn rallied for the win. RF D'Andre Smith led off the inning with a single and stole second base. With one out, 2B Jefrey De Los Santos was hit by a pitch and then LF Omar De Los Santos was plunked as well to load the bases with only one out. Nick Morabito hit a soft ground ball to first and Hudson Valley's 3B Kiko Romero made a perfect throw to the plate to retire Smith at the plate and keep the Renegades ahead, now with two outs in the seventh inning. That's when Reimer roped a single into right field that allowed both Jefrey and Omar De Los Santos to score and give Brooklyn a 3-2 win.
RHP Eduardo Herrera (2-0) tossed 1.1 scoreless frames to collect the win for Brooklyn.
Unfortunately for Brooklyn, Game 2 was a different story. RHP Jonah Tong struggled with his command in his 16th High-A start of the season, walking six batters - including three bases-loaded walks in the loss. Still, Tong fought through five full innings.
The Renegades did the majority of their scoring in the second. Hudson Valley loaded the bases thanks to a pair of singles and a walk through the first three batters of the frame. From there, Tong issued a walk to RF Garrett Martin, bringing home the game's first run. Tong would get LF Anthony Hall to fly out to left, but then Tong allowed two more bases-loaded walks, pushing Hudson Valley’s lead to 3-0.
Hudson Valley was not done there, as SS Greg Lombard Jr. would then collect an RBI groundout to plate Martin. All nine batters came to bat in the frame, as Avina struck out to end the lopsided frame.
Nick Ortiz’s crew was back for more in the sixth against RHP Alfred Vega. After a couple of walks with a base hit sandwiched between, LF Anthony Hall provided the fifth Renegades run of the day with an RBI groundout. Vega then got 3B Brenny Escanio to pop out, Riggio laced a two run double to right field, extending the Renegades cushion to 7-0. Brooklyn was unable to scratch anything further across.
Brooklyn and Hudson Valley return to action on Thursday night at Maimonides Park. LHP Felipe De La Cruz (3-6, 4.42 ERA) will aim to get Brooklyn back in the win column. He’ll be opposed by RHP Baron Stuart (6-3, 4.02 ERA). First pitch is set for 7:00 p.m.
Junior Tilien opens the scoring in Game One of today's doubleheader with an RBI single - the @nationalgridus Safe at Home Run of the Game.
