Anthony Rieber Newsday: Mets' Brandon Nimmo hits go-ahead blast in sixth, Edwin Diaz notches save in series win over Phillies. "A lot happened at Citi Field on Sunday night in the Mets’ final regular-season home game. Pete Alonso got two standing ovations for what may or may not have been his last Citi Field game in a Mets uniform. Mets fans packed the ballpark to the tune of 43,139, the club’s second sellout in a row. And most importantly, the Mets continued their march to the postseason with a 2-1 victory that denied the Phillies the chance to clinch the NL East title for the second straight day."

Brian Joura Mets360: "Brandon Nimmo gave the Mets the lead with a solo homer and Edwin Diaz came on for a six-out save, lifting the Mets to a 2-1 win over the Phillies Sunday night at Citi Field. The victory gave the Mets the series win and upped their record against the Phillies to 6-7, while cutting Philadelphia’s lead to five games."

NY Post: Mets enter Braves showdown in driver's seat after Brandon Nimmo, bullpen secure series win over Phillies. "As Edwin Diaz completed the final out of his two-inning save, the Mets’ two-game lead over the Braves for the NL’s third wild card was secure. Two victories in three games at Truist Park (since the Mets would hold the tiebreaker based on head-to-head with the Braves) will guarantee the Mets their second postseason appearance in three years."

NY Post: Pete Alonso tips helmet to standing ovation during what could be final Mets home game. "Pete Alonso tipped his helmet to the crowd before his first at-bat Sunday night in what could be his final game at Citi Field as a Met. It followed a partial standing ovation from the sellout crowd in Queens, with the fans chanting the first baseman’s name as he got to the plate in the bottom of the first."

NY Post: Who nudged Pete Alonso to give helmet tip with Mets future uncertain. "Alonso said home plate umpire John Libka had a message for him when he got into the box. 'John said, ‘Are you gonna tip your cap or something? I can give you time,’ Alonso said after the Mets’ 2-1 win over Philadelphia. 'I said, ‘What?’ I was worried about my at-bat, but [thought] ‘Yeah, I should.’ I’m happy John reminded me.'”

1962

In his first major league start, 17 year-old first baseman Ed Kranepool gets his first hit, an eighth-inning double at the Polo Grounds in the Mets' 2-1 walk-off victory over Chicago. When the former James Monroe High School standout retires, he will be the franchise leader in eight offensive categories, including collecting 1418 hits during his 18 seasons with the team.

1969

Exactly one year after their manager suffered a heart attack in the dugout during a game against Atlanta, the Mets give Gil Hodges a reason to breathe a bit easier when the team clinches a tie for the NL East flag by beating the Cardinals, 3-2, on an 11th inning walk-off single stroked by Bud Harrelson off Bob Gibson. Prior to the Shea Stadium victory, Linton H. Bishop, Jr., the skipper's cardiologist, had sent him a telegram that read, "Happy to see you're No. 1. Hope your team does as well as your heart."

2008

Jose Reyes collects his 200th hit of the season with a bases-loaded triple in a much-needed Mets 6-2 victory over the Cubs at Shea Stadium. The 25 year-old shortstop joins Lance Johnson (1996) as one of the only two players in franchise history to reach the esteemed plateau.

Baseball Reference:

1964: The Mets surprise the Cards and Roger Craig, 2 - 1, scoring the winner on an error. The Cards' only run is Bill White's homer off Galen Cisco. Cards manager Johnny Keane is quoted as saying he has no idea whether he will be asked to return as Cards manager next year.
