From the Mets 4 Phillies 1 Post Game Notes - 10/9/2024:

Mets

  • Clinched a Postseason series for the first time at Citi Field...Was the first time the Mets clinched a Postseason series at home since the 2000 NLCS vs. St. Louis...Will play in the NLCS for the ninth time in franchise history...Is their first trip to the NLCS since 2015.
  • Are 13-9 all-time in clinching games.
  • Are 57-42 (.576) all-time in Postseason play, the third-best winning percentage in major league history behind Miami (24-16, .600) and the Yankees (245-179, .578).
  • Have won 14 of their last 16 home games dating back to August 21.

Jose Quintana

  • Has not allowed an earned run in each of his last three Postseason starts dating back to October 7, 2022 (NLWC Game 1 vs. Philadelphia with St. Louis)...It is tied for the second-longest such streak in MLB Postseason history...Is the fifth pitcher in franchise history to post back-to-back starts of 5.0+ innings and allow no earned runs in the Postseason (Last: Tom Glavine 2006 NLDS Game 2 vs. Los Angeles and 2006 NLCS Game 1 vs. St. Louis).

Francisco Lindor

  • Hit a grand slam in the sixth inning to put the Mets in front 4-1...It is his second career Postseason grand slam (Also: 2017 ALDS Game 2 vs. Yankees)...Was the second grand slam in Mets Postseason history (Also: Edgardo Alfonzo 1999 NLDS Game 1 at Arizona)...His six grand slams with the Mets are tied with Mike Piazza for the most in franchise history (Including Postseason).
  • Was his first career Postseason game with multiple extra-base hits.

Mark Vientos

  • Recorded his fourth consecutive multi-hit game, tying him with Daniel Murphy (2015) and Todd Ziele (2000) for the longest such streak in franchise history during the Postseason.

David Peterson

  • Earned his first career Postseason win...Has not allowed ar over 6.1 innings in Postseason play.
Ranger Suarez:
  • Escaped bases loaded jams in both the first and second innings…Is the first pitcher in Postseason history to allow four or more hits and two or more walks in the first two innings combined without allowing a run.

NY Post: Mets take miracle run to NLCS by conquering rival Phillies on euphoric Francisco Lindor grand slam. "Lindor’s mighty bat delivered a sixth-inning grand slam that helped remove the Phillies from the Mets’ October “to-do” list with a 4-1 victory in Game 4 of the NLDS."

Brian Joura Mets 360: "The Mets had bases-loaded situations in both the first and second innings but were unable to capitalize, which made the Lindor slam even more gratifying. The Mets had eight hits and six walks in their eight turns at bat. They should have had more runs than they did but that’s what happens when you go 3-15 with RISP and two of those hits were of the infield variety and didn’t score runs."

NY Post: Mets catch break on controversial Phillies foul ball: ""With two outs and a runner on first base [in the 8th|, Phillies third baseman Alec Bohm ripped a hard ground ball down the first base line and out of the reach of Pete Alonso, which would have at least put runners on the corners...With the Mets clinging to a 4-1 lead, it would have brought the tying run the the plate. But first base umpire Carlos Torres called the ball foul..."

Laura Albanese Newsday: Three takeaways from the Mets' NLDS-clinching win over the Phillies. "Despite the three-run lead, Diaz’s ninth was rocky. Nine of the first 11 pitches he threw went for balls, and he put the first two batters on, allowing Roger Clemens’ son, Kody Clemens, to come up as the tying run...Diaz most certainly must be gassed - he’s thrown over 150 pitches in the last 10 days - Diaz, with his 8.10 postseason ERA this year, is far from untouchable. But if his stuff is still good, and now that he'll be rested, there’s a chance he could rebound."

1963

The Mets announce the club has 'traded' coaches with the Giants, bringing Wes Westrum to New York in exchange for Cookie Lavagetto, who is recovering from a serious illness and requested a position nearer to his home in Oakland. Mets manager Casey Stengel met and became fond of his new coach during the recent All-Star Game, and will be replaced by him as the team's second skipper in franchise history when the 75 year-old 'Old Perfessor' retires in 1965.

1973

In the fifth and deciding game, the Mets win their second National League pennant in franchise history, beating the Reds, 7-2. Tom Seaver, who gives up seven hits in 8.1 innings, bests Cincinnati right-hander Jack Billingham in the Shea Stadium showdown.

1973

During oral arguments in front of the U.S. Supreme Court, Potter Stewart is handed a note with the startling news that Vice President Agnew had just resigned. The message also informs the glum Republican Justice, a big Reds fan, that the Mets are ahead of Cincinnati in the NLCS, 2-0.

Baseball Reference:

2015: The Mets are cruising along with a 2 - 1 lead behind rookie Noah Syndergaard in the 7th inning of Game 2 of the NLDS when Chase Utley barrels into SS Ruben Tejada to break up a potential inning-ending double play. He not only succeeds, but also breaks Tejada's leg in the process while the Mets vainly argue for an interference call. Major League Baseball will hand Utley a two-game suspension for his unnecessarily violent slide, but in the meantime, Los Angeles takes advantage of the controversial play to score four runs in the inning and ends up a 5 - 2 winner, evening the series.
