Abbey Mastracco NY Daily News: Carlos Mendoza, David Stearns offer no insight at Winter Meetings after Mets acquire Juan Soto. "It’s one of the more annoying parts about offseason transactions. Until a physical is passed, the contract isn’t exactly official. And until it’s official, team personnel can’t talk about it."

Laura Albanese Newsday: Juan Soto's 15-year deal has short-term benefits that outweigh long-term risks, experts say. "Soto, 26, who agreed to the largest guaranteed contract in North American sports history at 15 years and $765 million, might be costing baseball’s richest owner a whole lot of money, but he also stands to elevate the franchise, increase ticket sales, provide profitable merchandising opportunities and raise TV ratings for the team’s flagship network, SNY, said Mark Conrad, professor of law and ethics at Fordham University, and director of its sports business concentration."

NY Post: Juan Soto saves about $8 million in state income tax with Mets signing bonus. "The Post’s Jon Heyman reported that Soto received a $75 million signing bonus, which is not susceptible to enormous New York state income taxes as the slugger is a resident of Florida which does not tax personal income."

Jon Heyman NY Post: Steve Cohen wasn’t convinced Mets won the Juan Soto sweepstakes — until he got his ‘yes’. “'I was being logical. When you have [Aaron] Judge, it’s tough to beat that,' Cohen told The Post by phone...The combination of perks that included a signing bonus of $75M (the Yankees offered $60M), escalators that can take the deal to $805 million, a no-trade clause, no deferrals (the Yankees also had none), the fifth-year opt-out (at age 30), and a suite for the Soto family probably helped push them over the finish line."

NY Post: Mets’ suite offer Yankees refused to match helped sway Juan Soto’s decision. "The Yankees on the other hand balked at the idea of including a free suite for the Soto clan in their deal, according to Jon Heyman. The fact that superstar Aaron Judge pays for his own suite and even Derek Jeter had paid during his playing days seemed to prevent them from budging on the request."

Tim Healey Newsday: After Juan Soto deal, Mets' next big question is Pete Alonso. "As one uninvolved baseball person phrased it, referencing Cohen’s art collecting hobby: 'If you have the painting, you may as well get the frame.'...Notes & quotes:...Ronny Mauricio (torn ACL a year ago) is progressing well but unlikely to play winter ball, according to Stearns . . . Stearns said righthander Paul Blackburn (surgery to fix a spinal fluid leak) is on pace to have “a relatively normal spring training” and be ready for Opening Day."

MLB.com: Which all-time marks will Soto challenge before his career is done? "Barring serious or repeated injury (as we’ve seen happen to Trout), Soto’s going to hit 500-plus homers. He’s going to set or challenge the all-time record for walks and walk rate. He’s going to be in the conversation for era-adjusted on-base percentage; he’s going to be in the top 10 and possibly high up within it for batting runs."

MLB.com: Soto's on-base skills are unlike anything we've seen. "Soto's combination of elite contact hitting and elite plate discipline puts him in a league of his own. This season, 24% of Soto's swings produced hard contact (an exit velocity of 95 mph or higher), the best among any hitter who took at least 1,000 swings. Also this season, Soto only chased 18% of pitches outside the strike zone, second-best among any hitter who saw at least 1,000 pitches that were out of the zone."

MLB.com: Why leaving Yankee Stadium won't affect Soto. "Lefty slugger's OPS was 57 points higher away from the Bronx in '24"

NY Post: Mets talking to Jonathan Loaisiga in latest potential move for ex-Yankee. "ESPN was the first to report the Mets’ interest in Loaisiga, who had season-ending elbow surgery last April after just three appearances for the Yankees. Loaisiga, though, is expected to be ready for spring training...Loaisiga, who turned 30 last month, has commonality with another ex-Yankee who has now joined the Mets in Clay Holmes — in that, at his best, he often throws a hard, heavy sinker and induces a lot of ground balls."

PRESS RELEASE: METS SIGN TWO-TIME ALL-STAR RHP CLAY HOLMES Mets made the deal official yesterday noting "Holmes posted a 65.0% ground ball rate last season, which was second in the majors among pitchers with at least 50.0 innings. He was one of four pitchers in the majors with a groundball percentage of 60% or more and a strikeout percentage of 25% or more last season. Over the last three years, he has posted a 68.6% ground ball percentage, which is the best in the majors."

12/8/24 Mets Roster Moves: Mets sign RHP Yuhi Sako to a minor league contract "Last year the 25 year old Japanese native pitched in 18 Independent League games, 17 starts, going 6-3 with a 3.40 ERA, 103 innings, 92 Ks;  He has a hitch in his motion that could will give hitters a different look."

Baseball Prospectus released their Top 20 Mets Prospect list noting that: "The State of the System: While some of the big names in the system had their stock slide over the past year due to injury and underperformance, the Mets have built impressive depth throughout their farm system as their processes have improved."

National Pastime.com:

1971

In one of the worst deals in franchise history, the Mets trade 24-year-old Nolan Ryan and three prospects to the Angels for six-time All-Star third baseman Jim Fregosi. The Texan fireballer will set the all-time strikeout record (5,714) and become a Hall of Fame member, while their new 30-year-old infielder (.232, 5, 32) plays less than two full seasons in New York, providing little help for the team.

1982

The Mets trade starter Mike Scott, who compiled a 14-27 record during his four years with the team, to the Astros in exchange for Danny Heep. After learning how to throw the split-finger fastball from Roger Craig, the right-hander becomes the staff's ace, leading Houston to the post-season, throwing a no-hitter, and winning 110 out 191 decisions during his nine-year tenure with the club.

1984

The Expos trade catcher Gary Carter to the Mets for backstop Mike Fitzgerald, flycatcher Herm Winningham, third baseman Hubie Brooks, and right-hander Floyd Youmans. The perennial All-Star plays a key role in New York's success over the rest of the decade.

2008

The Mets complete a $37 million, three-year contract with free-agent reliever Francisco Rodriguez. The former Angels' closer, who fills a big void in the New York bullpen due to Billy Wagner's injury, set a major league record last season, recording 62 saves.

2008

In a 12-player, three-team trade, the Indians send outfield prospect Franklin Gutierrez to Seattle to get Mets side-slinging reliever Joe Smith and second baseman Luis Valbuena from the Mariners. New York's Aaron Heilman, Endy Chavez, southpaw Jason Vargas, and three minor leaguers go to the Mariners for closer JJ Putz, who be the setup man for recently acquired Francisco Rodriguez, center fielder Jeremy Reed, and reliever Sean Green.

2008

With the fourth richest deal in major league history, the most ever offered to a pitcher, the Yankees and free-agent CC Sabathia agree on a $161 million, seven-year contract, with an opt-out clause after three years. The 28-year-old right-hander's $23 million average annual salary eclipses the Mets' February agreement with Johan Santana.
