Mets Links:

Mets sign International Free Agent Elian Pena "Per Baseball America and multiple reports on X, the New York Mets have signed SS Elian Pena to a $5 million signing bonus.  This represents almost all of the Mets $6.2 million International Free Agent pool."

Baseball America: New York Mets 2025 International Class Scouting Report "Dominican righthander Yobanny Sanchez is 6-foot-2, 190 pounds with a fastball up to 92 mph with good movement and a chance to start with flashes of feel for a breaking ball and changeup. Dominican outfielder Jhoanel Cuello is a lefty who stands out for his bat, consistently performing well in games with good bat-to-ball skills and gap power." (Subscription required).

Will Sammon The Athletic: Mets sign 17-year-old Elian Peña to franchise-record $5 million signing bonus. "In one of Peña’s more well-known workouts in scouting circles, he took approximately 50 plate appearances over a three-day span. People familiar with the matter say he never swung at a pitch out of the strike zone. That’s one example of why one scout referred to him as a 'one-in-every-five-years type of situation.'" (Subscription required).

Laura Albanese Newsday: Mets sign 17-year-old shortstop Elian Peña, the top international position prospect. "The lefthanded-hitting Peña is “one of the most advanced hitters in the 2025 class” and has “one of the best combinations of hitting ability and power,” per Baseball America, which compared him to Rafael Devers. MLB.com’s prospect rankings note that he’s a potential five-tool player, with mature plate discipline. An above-average defender, Peña, 5-10, 167 pounds, could also be a fit at third base, according to Baseball America."

NY Post: Mets pushing for Pete Alonso resolution with time of the essence. "...the Mets have let Alonso’s camp know they need a decision — and soon — on whether the two sides can do a deal as they want to make sure to leave themselves enough time and options to pivot elsewhere prior to spring training, The Post has learned."

NY Post: Yankees interested in Tim Hill reunion but Mets also in play for reliever. "The Mets are also considering signing the 34-year-old who emerged as a dependable weapon in The Bronx, The Post confirmed."

1/15/25 Mets Roster Moves: Mets claim Austin Warren off Waivers "The New York Mets have announced on X that they have claimed RHP Austin Warren off waivers from the San Francisco Giants.  Warren had Tommy John Surgery in 2023 when a member of the Angels.  The Giants signed him last Winter and he also spent time on the IL in 2024.  He split time last year with the Giants and minor leagues appearing in 6 games, 10.2 innings, 1.69 ERA, 1.313 WHIP, 9 hits, 1 HR, 5 walks, 7 Ks."

NY Post: Mets claim Austin Warren to add another bullpen option. "The 28-year-old Warren missed most of last season with San Francisco while rehabbing from Tommy John surgery...He was designated for assignment by the Giants on Jan. 8 to open a spot for backup catcher Sam Huff."

2002

Pedro Astacio (8-14, 5.09) agrees to a one-year, $5 million incentive-laden free-agent deal with the Mets. The 32-year-old right-hander, after being traded to the Astros by the Rockies last season, developed shoulder problems.

2003

Gary Carter will become the first player, and most likely the only one, to wear an Expos hat on his Hall of Fame plaque. Although the former catcher had expressed his wish to be immortalized as a member of the Mets, the team which presently employs him, and the franchise he helped win the 1986 World Series, Cooperstown decided the 'Kid' should enter the Hall with a Montreal logo.

2020

The Mets and recently-hired skipper Carlos Beltrán announced they have "agreed to mutually part ways," due to his role in the Astros' cheating scheme of using electronics to steal signs. The move follows the dismissal of Red Sox manager Alex Cora, Houston's bench coach in 2017, when Beltrán, the only player mentioned by name in the Commissioner's nine-page report, played for the team.

Baseball Reference:

1986 - The Minnesota Twins trade Tim Teufel and Pat Crosby to the New York Mets in exchange for Billy BeaneBill Latham, and Joe Klink. Minnesota also trades Dave Engle to the Tigers for Chris Pittaro and Alejandro Sanchez. Teufel will platoon with Wally Backman during the Mets' championship run this season.

1996Major League Baseball's executive council approves a history-making first: interleague play for the 1997 season. The Players' Association will also give its approval, enabling geographic rivals like New York's Mets  and YankeesChicago's Cubs and White Sox, and Los Angeles' Angels and Dodgers to play each other during the regular season.

2020: Carlos Beltran becomes the third manager to lose his job as a result of the sign-stealing scandal linked to the 2017 Astros. He is dismissed by the Mets after being the only player named in the investigation report made public by the Commissioner's office. His firing follows that of A.J. Hinch and Alex Cora a few days earlier. Having been named to the position after the 2019 season, he never had an opportunity to actually manage a game.
