Bill Madden NY Daily News: Pete Alonso’s options dwindle as Scott Boras fails to generate bidding war. "By now one would hope Pete Alonso has finally gotten the memo: The Mets never wanted him back. That’s why they never budged off their three-year offer in the $70 million range to him when he and his agent Scott Boras continued to push, first, for six and five-year deals and finally three years with an annual average value substantially more than the $23 million per Mets offer." Joel Sherman NY Post: Steve Cohen now operating with a Mets budget is always subject to change. "Now, I will have to see this discipline through Opening Day to fully believe it. Cohen, when it comes to desired art or ballplayers, has demonstrated: When he wants something, he will not let price be much of a deterrent. As this sentence was being written, Alonso was still a free agent, and until he signs elsewhere, I cannot fully see a door closed, no matter how much the Mets insist they are pivoting — which began with the $7.5 million re-signing of Jesse Winker and a two-year, $22 million agreement with lefty reliever A.J. Minter."

But this time, I believe baseball would have been better off if Sasaki had picked the Blue Jays instead of leaving them as baseball’s perennial bridesmaid."
