From the Tigers 5 Mets 0 Post Game Notes 4/1/2024:

  • Mets Suffered their fourth straight loss to start the season...ls their longest losing streak to open the season since 2005 when they began the year 0-5.
    • Have lost four straight to the Tigers and move to 11-17 all-time against Detroit.
    • Was their first tine being shut out in an extra-inning game since -"July 10, 2022 vs. Marni when they lost 2-0 in 10 innings.
  • Sean Manaea did not allow a hit through his first 5.2 innings before allowing a single to Andy Ibanez...was the longest ever no-hit by a Met in their team debut beating the previous high of 5.2 innings by Brain Bannister (4/5/06)...was the second-longest no-hit bid by a Mets in their first start with the club...Tracy Stallard threw 6.0 no-hit innings in his first career start with the Mets on June 2nd, 1963 Vs. Pittsburgh...Stallard had 13 relief appearances before making his first career start as a Met...Courtesy of Elias...had eight strikeouts, tied with Johan Santana (2008) for the most strikeouts by a Mets left-handed pitcher in their team debut.

Laura Albanese Newsday. Mets waste Sean Manaea gem, drop to 0-4 with 10-inning loss to Tigers. "With their rotation in disarray, their offense nonexistent and their record winless, the Mets turned to one of their newest acquisitions for solace Monday night. And for six innings, Sean Manaea provided just that. He transfixed the Tigers, kept them off the board and was just short of perfect. And it still wasn’t enough."

NY Post: Silent night Winless Mets get shut out to waste pitcher’s strong debut in 10-inning loss “Michael Tonkin surrendered five unearned runs in the 10th inning — with Joey Wendle’s fielding error at second base contributing — as the Mets wasted Sean Manaea’s gem in his debut for the club. The lefty Manaea didn’t allow his first hit until there were two outs in the sixth and finished with a one-hitter over six shutout innings with eight strikeouts and two walks.”

Kiner's Korner: "[Manaea's] strong performance was complemented by an outstanding throw from left fielder Brandon Nimmo. Nimmo's throw prevented Tigers catcher Carson Kelly from scoring on Andy Ibanez's single, preserving a scoreless game in the sixth inning."

SNY.TV: "Brandon Nimmo charged hard and fired a perfect one-hop throw to get Kelly out at the plate by 10 feet, with Francisco Alvarez absorbing some contact and hanging on to make the tag to end the inning...Alvarez, in his next at-bat after the collision, ripped a two-out, two-strike pitch into the gap in left field and with great hustle and a deft slide was in with a double...Alvarez had a big chance with two on and one out in the first but bounced into an inning-ending 6-4-3 double-play. He finished 1-for-4."

Brian Joura Mets360: "It’s hard to decide which one was more brutal – the Mets fielding in the 10th inning or their hitting throughout the game. Either way, they lost their fourth straight, with a 5-0 setback to the Tigers Monday night at Citi Field."

Metstradamus: Mark Canha’s Personal Journey"Canha isn’t a superstar by any means, but he gives you good production, he gets big hits, he doesn’t kill you in the field, and he’s proven that getting hit by pitches can be sustainable (28 last season, 27 in ’21)."

MLB Film Room - Mets Vs. Marlins Highlights:

NY Post: Mets-Nationals Opening Day postponed over COVID-19 issues. "On Wednesday, Nationals general manager Mike Rizzo announced that one unnamed Washington player, had tested positive for COVID-19 and contact-tracing rules compelled the team to quarantine five other people — four players and a coach — due to close contact with the infected player. The player who tested positive took his test on Monday."

Ken Davidoff NY Post: Postponed Mets opener a harsh reminder of ongoing COVID-19 battle. “You can get sold to a big-time billionaire who acquires an All-Star shortstop and turns him into a centimillionaire. You can declare it a new era, a new day, a new franchise. You cannot, however, outmaneuver a pandemic.”

NY Post: Nationals working to get through Opening Day COVID-19 problem. “The number of players on the Nationals testing positive for COVID-19 has risen to three — with a fourth awaiting the results of retesting — wiping out at least their home opener Thursday against the Mets.”

AP News: Alonso hits 1st career HR to help Mets beat Marlins 7-3. Pete Alonso, their 230-pound rookie slugger, squeezed into a clubhouse cart as ordered by teammates for a postgame dousing that included every available substance. “A couple of eggs,” Alonso said. “Barbecue sauce. Mayonnaise. Beer. Shaving cream. Maybe ketchup and mustard. Maybe relish.” He didn’t mind because the shower was celebratory — a reward for his first major league homer. Alonso’s three-run shot capped a four-run ninth inning, and the Mets overcame 16 strikeouts by their hitters to rally past the Miami Marlins 7-3 Monday night.

AP News: DeJong’s 1st multihomer game leads Cards over Mets 5-1. “After solid starts by Noah Syndergaard and Jacob deGrom, Matz (0-1) tried to put behind an injury-decimated sophomore season in which the lefty slumped to a 2-7 record. He struggled with his control and was up to 51 pitches after two innings and 73 after three. He lasted five innings, giving up three runs and four hits, as the Mets kept up their terrible trend of last year, when they were 16-36 in series finales.”

National Pastime.com: The Mets rally overcome a 6-0 deficit, beating the Cardinals at Shea Stadium, 7-6. The decisive run in the biggest Opening Day comeback of the century scores as a result of an unusual double play when Bernard Gilkey, the base runner on first, is doubled up on Rico Brogna's short sac fly to right field (RF-1B-SS-1B-SS), allowing Lance Johnson to cross home plate on the play.
